San Diego vs Los Angeles: Dodgers Look to Extend NL West Lead

As Germany and Argentina rest and get ready for their epic showdown in the 2014 FIFA World Cup championship match, we shift gears and check in on Major League Baseball action. It’s a busy Friday night as all 30 clubs hit the diamonds for their final series before the MLB All Star break. After perusing the entire slate of 15 games, we like Los Angeles over San Diego who battle at 10:10 PM ET on July 11, 2014, from Dodger Stadium in LA.

Los Angeles: Preseason chalk finally on top in the NL West

It’s taken them 94 games but Los Angeles, preseason chalk to claim the 2014 MLB World Series, has finally taken over top spot in the NL West. It’s only a one game lead over San Francisco but it’s a starting point and we expect bigger things from the Dodgers as we head towards the Fall Classic. After a blistering run, that saw them go 13-4 to close out June, Los Angeles (52-42) has struggled some in July as they have posted a 4-5 record but they did register a 2-1 win over the Padres last night. RHP Dan Haren (8-5 ERA 4.06) heads to bump for LA here.

San Diego Padres: Slowly plodding towards another losing season

Being a fan of the San Diego Padres is not all peaches and gravy. Sitting with a 40-52 record, that leaves them eleven games behind LA in the NL West, the Padres are well on their way to a fourth straight losing season. Although their pitching staff, with a combined 3.23 ERA, is nothing to write home about – the offense is biggest problem in America’s perfect City. The Friars .215 team batting average and 273 runs scored are both last in the majors. A bright light for the Padres this season, rookie RHP Jesse Hahn (4-2 ERA .234) gets the start tonight.
