Denver vs San Diego: NFL Week 8 AFC West Mile High Showdown
Denver Broncos: AFC juggernaut keeps gaining momentum
Say what you want about Peyton Manning’s playoff track record but no one can deny that he’s a beast during NFL regular season action. Denver, despite a fairy stacked season opening schedule, leads the league in scoring as Manning & Co. are averaging 31.5 points per game. The Broncos revamped defense is a solid compliment to the high octane offense as they rank sixth in points allowed at 20.2 PPG. Denver’s 5-1 record includes wins over two division leaders (Colts and Cardinals) and last weeks 42-17 thumping of NFC West powerhouse San Francisco. This is Denver’s fifth home game, against two road contests, and the Broncos are on an 20-3 roll in the Rockies. One of the blemishes is the Chargers 27-20 win in Week 14 last season. We don’t see a repeat of that result.
San Diego Chargers: Bolts need a jolt for their struggling defense
While we have been fans of San Diego early on this season – we are seeing causes for concern. First, since season opening contests versus Arizona (L 18-17) and Seattle (W 30-21) the Chargers have enjoyed a cupcake schedule that featured games against five teams with a collective 9-24 record. Second, injuries are starting to take a toll on the Chargers defense. Neither of the Bolts top two cornerbacks are expected to play tonight as Brandon Flowers is officially out with a concussion while Jason Verret (missed Week 7) is questionable with a shoulder injury. This is especially disturbing after we watched Raiders rookie QB Derreck Carr carve up the Chargers secondary with 282 passing yard and four touchdowns - with Flowers and Verrey in the lineup two weeks ago.
NFL 2014 Week 8 Prediction: Denver avenged the Week 14 home loss last season with a 24-17 win at Mile High during the AFC Divisional playoff round. That contest wasn’t as close as the final result suggests as the Broncos were up 24-7 halfway through the fourth quarter. Missing your top pass defenders is not good when you are heading into Peyton’s Place and we can’t get past how bad the Chargers defense has looked the last two weeks. With their bye week past, and six of their next nine games on the road - including their next three, Denver needs to take care of business in this divisional battle at home tonight. We are laying the spread price on the SportsInteraction betting board as we wager 300 units on Manning & Crew to roll in the Rockies.
