2015 Triple Crown winners follows a path of past Champions

There is history in the making this weekend as American Pharoah becomes just the fourth horse racing Triple Crown Champion to enter the Travers Stakes. Gallant Fox was the first as he ignited New York in 1930 as some 40,000 fans showed up at Saratoga and witnessed one of the biggest upsets in horse racing history. On a muddy track that day, 100-1 longshot Jim Dandy won by three lengths over Gallant Fox. In 1941, the amazing Whirlaway overcame a 13-length deficit on another muddy track and became the first and only horse to capture “superfecta” of thoroughbred racing when he added the Travers to his Triple Crown victories. Track conditions are fantastic today.

This crop of Triple Crown runners dosen’t stand up to the Affirmed vs Alydar rivalry

In perhaps the most memorable Travers Stakes race ever, the “Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier” of horse racing took place when Affirmed and Alydar hooked up in the 1978 Travers Stakes. Affirmed and Alydar finished first and second respectively in all three Triple Crown races prior to their slugfest at Saratoga.  Affirmed would win but was placed second after it was ruled that he interfered with Alydar heading into the turn coming off the backstretch. Alydar stopped for a quick second when Affirmed made a move towards the rail, almost tossing jockey Jorge Velásquez, but managed to get back into the race and he fought gamely all the way to wire. Affirmed ended up with a 7-3 edge over Alydar during their historic racing rivalry. There isn’t an “Alydar” to battle American Pharoal who we have been following since his romp in the Arkansas Derby. AP is a true “Big Horse”.

146th Travers Stakes Final Thoughts: With Breeders’ Cup points on the line here, five Triple Crown runners are all taking their third shot at The Ruler of the Racetrack as Keen Ice, Frosted, Tale of Verve and Frammento are all enter in the Travers Stakes field. Upstart, though it’s rumored that he may get scratched by his handlers, finished last in the Kentucky Derby and third against AP in the Haskell Invitation. Fresh off an impressive win here at Saratoga in the Curlin, albeit against much lesser talent, Smart Transition has a shot at boosting exotic tickets here. Of all the matchups, the first ever battle between 2014 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Winner Texas Red and American Pharoah is the most anticipated during the Midsummer Derby at the Spa. The Ruler of the Racetrack will continue his journey to the Breeders’ Cup with a romp in the Travers Stakes in New York today.
