Potential Superbowl Preview in Mexico

From the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico the NFL Week 11 Monday Night Football game looks like it may be the game of the season when two 9-1 teams with Superbowl aspirations lock horns. The Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs are two teams that do it with innovative offensive schemes that by design put their explosive playmakers in space to gain yards in chunks.

As a result the Rams have the 2nd highest points total through 10 weeks with 335. Quarterback Jared Goff is 2nd in passing yards and Running Back Todd Gurley leads the league in rush yards and could potentially break the all time single season touchdown record this year.

The Kansas City Chiefs lead the league in scoring with 353 points. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the league leader in passing and one of the favorites for MVP.

Mahomes

And when two teams are this good, much credit should be given to head coaches Andy Reid and Sean McVay for getting the most out of their offensive talent. But what about the defense?

The Chiefs are 29th in total defense in terms of yards conceded. That being said they have conceded 240 points against which isn’t great but isn’t much worse then the Rams (231), who are ranked 13th in total defense And while they are making incremental improvements they are still winning games on the back of a high powered offense.

Both the Chiefs and the Rams have already lost a marquee game away from home this season. Both teams have also played in Denver at an altitude not dissimilar to what they will encounter in Mexico. So this game might likely be decided by who has the ball last or who, if anyone can generate one turnover and get their team an extra possession.

And I lean the Rams by a fine margin to do this. Over the course of 10 games the ONLY thing that seperates these teams statistically is pass defense. Kansas City is the 5th worst pass defense in the NFL conceding 289 yards per game while the Rams rank in the top 12 conceding 233 pass yards per game.

If anyone will be able to get a key defensive stop at some point on Monday it will be the Rams.

The urgency for homefield advantage

The Kansas City Chiefs currently sit atop the AFC. If they can finish the regular season as the 1 seed, the path to the Superbowl will go through Arrowhead, a stadium that has been measured as the loudest in the NFL and difficult for opposing teams to play in.

Having recently just moved in the Rams have not cultivated a home field edge in Los Angeles as of yet. However, not having to play the NFC Championship game at the Superdome in New Orleans, where they suffered their only loss of the season, will be paramount to their chances at success.

Both teams will be treating every game as must wins.
