The second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the Prince of Wales Stakes is the signature event of Fort Erie Race Track. Held in July, the race is run at 9.5 furlongs on dirt and was offered for a purse of $500,000 in 2016. Inaugurated in 1929, the event was established at the now defunct Thorncliffe Park Raceway and was also held at Old Woodbine Racetrack for a short time before being switched to Fort Erie in 1959.
Prince Of Wales Stakes Entries
Betting a great race like the Prince of Wales Stakes is a little more convenient and profitable when players hook up with the right online racebook. Not only can today’s horse players catch all the action from their laptop or mobile device, they can also reap the rewards of generous bonus, loyalty and rebate programs when they sign up for an account at one of the following racebooks.
The Prince of Wales offers a full complement of betting options from conventional to exotic. The race attracts a larger-than-average wagering handle from all sources and remains particularly popular among Canadian racing fans. In addition, the event lures in many American racing fans who are more accustomed to betting dirt races.
Positioned between the Queen’s Plate and Breeders’ Stakes, the Prince of Wales is one of Canada’s three premier races for three-year-olds. Unlike the Queen’s Plate and Breeders’ Stakes, the Prince of Wales is the lone dirt race of the series, giving handicappers a unique betting angle. The race has been won by many of Canada’s finest racehorses including the Hall of Fame filly Dance Smartly who captured the race and eventually the Triple Crown in 1991.
Prince Of Wales Stakes Picks
Betting the Prince of Wales requires a player to effectively speculate which runners might be able to handle a conventional dirt track and which runners are throw-outs based on their preference for synthetic or turf racing. In fact, because the Canadian Triple Crown itself is conducted over three distinctly different surfaces, players are well-advised to pay close attention to this issue throughout the series. Most horses in training demonstrate a preference for a particular surface and only exceptional animals are able to compete at the highest level on all three.

2008 winner Harlem Rocker was an exceptionally talented horse who many felt would have provided formidable competition for that year’s Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown if the horse’s owner, Frank Stronach, had chosen to take on that rival in the Preakness Stakes.
Instead, however, Stronach opted to send his Canadian-bred runner to the Prince of Wales Stakes where Harlem Rocker found the winner’s circle. Harlem Rocker also won the Withers Stakes and crossed the wire first in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile before being placed second by virtue of a controversial disqualification.Related articles
