Boxing: Callum Smith vs Canelo Alvarez

Lomachenko’s loss to Teofimo Lopez in October was the fight that would see Canelo Alvarez move to the No.1 pound-for-pound rankings, but it wasn’t to be. However, this next bout against the Liverpudlian Callum Smith.

Smith holds the WBA (Super) and The Ring super middleweight titles and is a dangerous fighter. Canelo will have to bring his A-game when the two face off at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, December 19th. The fight is available via DAZN tv and streaming service, starting at 9 pm (EST).

  • Canelo Alvarez (1.15) vs Callum Smith (5.25)

Alvarez is in his peak years 30 years old, going into his 57th professional boxing bout and holding a record of 53-1-2 throughout. The only loss the fighter has conceded is to the undefeatable Floyd Mayweather.

Canelo hasn’t fought in a year, but that won’t worry the Mexican. His head and body movement allow him to pick his opponents apart, whilst avoiding taking too many shots. This is what the oddsmakers posting the boxing betting odds expect to happen.

He’s up against Smith, who holds a record of 27-0 and looks to make his third title defence against Alvarez. He’s a smart fighter with knockout power and at 190cm, he’ll be a tough challenge for the champion.

He’ll look to use his long reach to his advantage. However, we’ve seen this before against Alvarez, who will work the body of the Brit to open up opportunities to score big shots to the head.

Canelo is the quicker, more nimble fighter and has exceptional power in both hands. If Smith can avoid the body shots and keep his distance, then he has a chance. However, we expect Alvarez to move in and out of the pockets and take the fight.

    Take Canelo to win this.

We have covered the moneyline and now we'll take a look at some of the great prop betting options available to boxing fans, including Round Victory and Method of Victory odds. Let's take a look.

Canelo Alvarez to win via KO, TKO, DQ or Refusal (1.90)

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez certainly has knockout power in both hands and has shown that to be the case. In his last 10 fights, he's won 5 of them via KO/TKO, including the 11th round knockout of Sergey Kovalev in the last fight at the end of 2019.

Although it's been a while since Alvarez stepped inside the ring for a major bout, we expect him to pick up where he left off and take the fight to Smith bouncing in and out and eventually taking him out.

Canelo Alvarez to win in round 6 (13.00)

The last 6th round finish we have seen from Canelo Alvarez was back in 2016, against Britain's Amir Khan. While in recent fights, many of his fights have gone the distance, except the Rocky Fielding fight, Smith doesn't pose the same kind of threat we have seen from fighters in the past.

Alvarez will face a new challenge in Smith, with his height and reach, but it's not something we think will cause the Mexican too much trouble. This wager has great odds and is well worth a punt.

Canelo Alvarez to win by unanimous decision (4.00)

Finally, we go to the result we've seen win by 3 times in his last 10 fights - most recently against Daniel Jacobs. Canelo will feel confident if the fight goes the distance, that he'll be able to win it.

It's possible the fight could go the distance if Smith has enough resilience to endure 36 minutes in the ring with Canelo. Goods odds for a decision wager in Alvarez's favor
