CONCACAF Gold Cup 2021

The 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup will be the 16th edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. It’s a biennial competition and takes place on the international stage, with teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean region.

The Gold Cup was slated to take place between the 2-25 of July 2021. But, given the year we’ve had a decision was made to reschedule it and push it back from July 10, through until August 1. Mexico was the last nation to win the CONCACAF Gold Cup and will look to defend its title next year.

Qualification Process

Rewind back to 2019, when there was an announcement that 12 teams would qualify directly through the 2019-20 CONCACAF Nations League and four others would qualify via the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup Qualifies. 

Fast-forward to 2020 and there’s an announcement from CONCACAF that the 2019 AFC Asian Cup champions and the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosts Qatar would participate in the 2021 and 2023 tournaments. As a result of this, there are just three teams that will qualify for the 2021 Gold Cup via the CONCACAF qualifiers. 

As it stands, these are the teams that will take in the 2021 Gold Cup in Qatar:

• Canada
• Honduras
• Grenada
• Jamaica
• United States
• Mexico
• El Salvador
• Costa Rica
• Curaçao
• Martinique
• Suriname
• Panama
• Qatar

The remaining four places will go to the teams that qualify through the CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifiers, which will take place in July 2021. 

Where will it take place?

The board for the CONCACAF came to a decision back in 2019, which announced that this year the competition would take place in Qatar – likely due to their involvement with the World Cup 2022. Moreover, each year the competition welcomes a team from outside the region to take part. As such, it was decided that Qatar would be invited to join.

The decision as to where the competition takes place is yet to be concluded. America is the favorite to host the competition but given the unforeseen year the world has seen with the arrival of the coronavirus, things are still up in the air. 

Does Canada have a chance to win?

While the last nine tournaments have been won by the USA or Mexico, the event prior to that was won by the Canadian soccer team. Incredibly, Canada only made it through the group stage thanks to a coin-toss, which was required to separate them and guest nation Korea.

From there they came from behind to beat Mexico with a golden goal in extra time, knocked out Trinidad and Tobago despite the presence of Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke, and defeated Colombia in the final. What a time to be alive for Canadian fans.

Canadian soccer has come a long way since then, and the establishment of the Canadian Premier League is a step in the right direction. Canada are currently ranked sixth in CONCACAF, ahead of the Jamaicans, which is an indication of their progress.

So is there a chance history could repeat in 2019? Well, it’s a long shot but it’s not out of the question.

Canada’s group features Mexico, which will be their first hurdle, although they shouldn’t have too many problems against Cuba and Martinique. If they do progress in second-place, they will likely face Costa Rica in the quarter-finals, although they won’t have to play Mexico again unless both teams make the semi-finals.

It’s never easy to beat the Mexicans, although they did it in 2000, so there’s a chance it could happen again this year, and if they can do that – it just could be the Canadian’s year to celebrate. Bettors get huge outsider odds of 29.00 for Canada to win the Gold Cup at William Hill.

What is the CONCACAF Gold Cup

The CONCACAF Gold Cup features nations from North America, Central America and the Caribbean, and is currently played every two years. 

In 2019, the tournament will feature 16 teams for the first time. The six teams who made it to the Hexagonal in 2018 World Cup qualifying gain automatic entry to the competition, while the other ten places are decided by qualification.

The teams were divided into these four groups

• Group A: Canada, Cuba, Martinique and Mexico.
• Grupo B: Bermuda, Costa Rica, Haiti and Nicaragua.
• Group C: Curaçao, El Salvador, Honduras and Jamaica.
• Group D: Guyana, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago and USA.

The CONCACAF Gold Cup can be considered the ‘northern’ version of the Copa America, a tournament thatfeatures the ten members of CONMEBOL (South America) including Brazil and Argentina.

There is currently no tournament where teams from both North and South America compete, although the USA has recently proposed to create one.

How to watch the CONCACAF Gold Cup

The CONCACAF Gold Cup can be seen on TSN and RDS in Canada.

When does the CONCACAF Gold Cup start

It all kicks off on June 15th, 2019 when Canada face Martinique at the Rose Bowl in California. This match, like each of the group-stage fixtures, will be part of a double-header – Mexico will play against Cuba in the following match. The group stage runs until June 26th – the final match features Panama and the USA in Kansas City.

The quarter-final stage will see the top-two teams from each group progress, and will be played in Houston and Philadelphia on the 29th and 30th of June respectively.

The semi-final stage will be played on the 2nd and 3rd of July at Glendale, Arizona and Nashville respectively, while the final will be held in Chicago on July 7th.

Canada is the only side since the inception of the Gold Cup in 1991 to win the tournament aside from Mexico (7 victories) and the USA (6 victories).

Incredibly, Mexico have converted 7 of their 8 final appearances, while the USA have reached the final more times (10 in total). That is serious domination!
