The NHL will be taking a mini Christmas break over the next few days. And when the Flames skate on to the ice at the Bell MTS Place at 8pm EST on Thursday, December 27th, they'll be squaring off against the only Western Conference Team with a better points tally than them this season.
The Calgary Flames entered Christmas leading the Pacific division with, 47 points, and a 22-12-3 record with a goal differential of +24, which is good enough for 2nd place in the conference. The Winnipeg Jets own the West's best record thus far with 50 points, a 24-10-2 record and a +27 goal difference.
In their only meeting this season, last month at the Saddledome, despite being outshot 40-26 and not earning a single powerplay to Winnipeg's four, Calgary won 6-3 on the back of a 5 goal first period. All six Flames' goals in that game were scored by a different skater, which is a trademark of this team. Calgary thus far has 11 players in double digit points, and five with 35+ points on the season; the mark of a good, well balanced team
And that's why the Jets are the best team in the Western Conference. At present they have 13 skaters in double digit points and 8 skaters with 20+ points on the season. The ability to roll out multiple scoring lines consistently on a nightly basis is what makes these two proud Canadian franchises formidable.
However, Calgary is in a bit of a dip losing three straight games and will be facing one of the best home ice teams in the NHL who will be well rested and eager to avenge their loss 1 month ago.
Take the Jets to win what should be an exciting affair and hopefully a preview of an eventual playoff series in the spring.
