Super Bowl Coin Flip History

Having the coin land in their favour doesn't guarantee a team anything on Super Bowl Sunday as the last three squads that won the flip battle, Atlanta, Carolina and Seattle, all lost the war. The Falcons and Seahawks both deferred and kicked off to New England who didn’t score on their first possession. Panthers PK Graham Gano kicked to Denver and Peyton Manning engineered a ten-play drive that ended with a Brandon McManus 34 YD FG in the Broncos 24-10 Super Bowl 50 victory.

Tails has won the call 27 times while Heads has come up on 24 occasions. Who wins the flip, and how they react, affects early proposition betting options. For example, the coin toss winner is not always a sure bet win the First Team To Get A First Down prop available at Bet365. Over the last 15 NFL title tilts, the team that received the opening kickoff managed a first down just six times. The other 13 first chain-moving plays came in the second series and eleven of those were passes.

Super Bowl 52 Coin Toss Prediction: Heads -105 NE Patriots -105

SB LII Coin Toss Result: Eagles call Tails - Flip is Heads - Patriots win the toss and defer.

Bill Belichick: Grande Master of Coin Toss Deferral

Winning the NFL title game coin toss is a big deal as decisions made after the flip will have ripple affects across the entire match. Arguably first put into practice by everyone, but truly mastered by Patriots HC Bill Belichick, more and more teams are deferring after winning the coin toss so they get the ball first in the second half. If their defer decision and game plan work properly, teams will score on the last possession of the first half and again on their opening drive in the third quarter.

Deferring, after winning the coin toss, is a new Super Bowl trend as teams that won the flip elected to receive during the first 42 contests. Arizona HC Ken Whisenhunt was a trailblazer in Super Bowl 43 vs Pittsburgh as the Cardinals were the first team to kickoff after winning the flip. The Steelers managed a field goal on their opening drive and posted a 27-23 victory. New Orleans went back to taking the ball after winning the Super Bowl 44 toss but the last seven winners have all deferred.

Memorable moments can happen early in the Super Bowl so be tuned in on time. WR/PK Devin Hestor lit up the South Beach night with an electrifying 92-yard kick return touchdown to open SB 41 - Chicago came short (29-17) vs Indianapolis. The start of a rough outing for Denver occurred when QB Peyton Manning fumbled and RB Knowshon Moreno was tackled in the end zone on the opening play of SB 48. That gave Seattle a 2-0 led and the Seahawks soared to a 43-8 victory.

Teams have passed on the first play of the Super Bowl nine times, including Manning wanting to pass when he was sacked during SB 48, and they have pounded the rock on the ground six times. Bodog has a First Offensive Play Of The Game prop priced at -105 pass and -125 run. Eagles pivot Nick Foles taking a shot down field early, with a pass attempt to get his feet wet, is our pick on the first play prop option. If New England receives the ball first - this selection could be in peril.

1st Play 1st Down: Since 1997 Manning to TE Owen Daniels (18 YD) is lone 1st play 1st down.
