US College Football Playoffs 2018-19 Year End Review – 2020 Update
Please Note: Free picks return in August 2020 – News and odds updates posted as warranted.
Ugh! That did not go well eh? Hesitant to jump into a playoff feature, without regular season winnings already in the bank, we crashed during the 2018-19 College Football Playoff series. While we cashed tickets all season, within our NCAAF futures feature, we didn’t make any predictions here until the New Year’s Six Bowl games. That started well but ended poorly. We compounded our issues by whiffing on the Clemson vs Alabama CFP National Championship match. Alas, we finished with a 2-6 record and a (-425.76) loss.
We promise to do our best to be better right out of the gate during the 2019-20 season. In the meantime, we offer hearty congratulations to National Championship MVP QB Trevor Lawrence, his supporting Clemson Crew and HC Dabo Swinney. A likeable group, the Tigers youthful exuberance was somewhat lacking with HC Nick Saban led Alabama squads. Holding a 14-13 lead after the first quarter, the Cats offense exploded, plus their defense stiffened, and the Cats rolled over the Crimson Tide 30-3 in final three quarters.
Despite the loss, Nick Saban is a sparklin 139-15 since 2008 in Alabama.
When the final whistle blew – the scoreboard showed a 44-16 blowout by Clemson. We had to go back to October 7, 2000, to find a loss even close to this in the Nick Saban US College Football era. That was a 41-9 spanking by #12 Florida when Saban prowled the sidelines as bench boss of the LSU Tigers. Alabama’s biggest loss, in the era of Saint Nick, was by 14 points as the Tide were rolled 35-21 at #19 South Carolina during the 2010 regular season and suffered 45-31 loss to Oklahoma in the 2014 CFP Sugar Bowl.
Clemson, who first fielded an Independent squad back in 1896, claimed a third NCAAF National Championship. The Tigers won their first title after a 12-0 regular season and 22-15 victory over Nebraska in the 1982 Orange Bowl. QB Deshaun Watson was the star when Clemson claimed their second crown with a 35-31 over Alabama in the 2017 CFP title match. We are especially happy for the players that stuck around for their Senior season and avenged a 24-6 Sugar Bowl thumping by the Tide in the 2018. Impressive by all.
Less than 48 hours after the Tigers celebration ended, at Levi’s Field in Santa Clara, CA, Canada’s own Bet99 sportsbook has 2020 College Football Playoff Championship prices on their betting board. While things may change, with players still declaring for the NFL Draft in April 2019, or others (Tide QB Jalen Hurts?) transferring to another school, Clemson has opened as tiny +175 chalk. Alabama is not far back with a +250 line while the Georgia Bulldogs have been tagged with a +550 National Championship price.
With NCAA Basketball and March Madness taking over the US College sports scene, this feature will receive updates as warranted. Prior to the 2019-20 regular season, we will jump in with quick weekly updates and well-researched NCAA Football predictions. In the meantime, we have sprinted out of the gate with our hoops futures and free picks early in the 2018-19 NCAAB season. We are also busy with previews and calls on the 2019 NFL playoffs through to the clash to claim Super Bowl 53 on February 3, 2019, in Atlanta, GA.
