Pelicans @ Raptors Game Preview

Toronto Raptors

After sweeping a four-game Western road trip for the first time in franchise history, the Toronto Raptors returned home on Saturday. The Raptors showed little effects from their road trip, quickly taking care of business against the Knicks. The win helped the Raptors improve to an NBA-best 12-1 record to start the year.

New Orleans Pelicans

After some injuries and sluggish play from Anthony Davis to start November, Davis looks excellent, averaging 29.0 points his last two games. Davis also made all 12 of his free throws in the New Orleans Pelicans 20-point win over the Suns on Saturday (impressive for Davis who was making only 71.4% before the game).

Game Snippet

The Pelicans have struggled against the Toronto Raptors during the Anthony Davis era. The Pelicans have lost six straight to Toronto. While Davis is a matchup nightmare for most teams in the NBA, the Raptors have done an outstanding job defending the MVP candidate. Davis averaged only 15.4 points against the Toronto Raptors, the lowest total against any team (for reference, Atlanta is second at 19.8 points per game).

Pelicans @ Raptors Game Predictions

The Raptors look to extend their NBA-best home when they welcome Anthony Davis and the Pelicans to town on Monday night. The Toronto Raptors have won eight of ten against the Pelicans. While Kawli Leonard is almost the number one factor considered when talking about the Toronto Raptors, in this particular matchup, it is the bigs for T.O.

As mentioned earlier, Davis has struggled against the Toronto Raptors in his career. Much of it has to do with the defensive efforts put forth by Serge Ibaka. Ibaka (and to a lesser extent Jonas Valanciunas and Pascal Siakim) have held Davis in check the last two seasons, including limiting him to only 18 points on 42.9% shooting in his previous game in Toronto.

While Ibaka has typically been a reliable defender, his offensive production in this game should also play an essential role in deciding the game. The Pelicans have some bigger guards in the league (which can cause some issues for Lowry and Fred VanVleet). However, with Ibaka now consistently chipping in 15 to 20 points, there is less cause for concern for the Raptors when the point guards are not significant contributors.

Overall, the Raptors are too good of a team to bet against at home. In any case, where Kawli or a Raptor is ruled out, it is okay to revisit the pick (and maybe look at the Pelicans on points). However, with everyone looking healthy and their ability to limit Davis over his career, there is no reason to bet against Toronto at home on Monday night.

Pick: Toronto Raptors to Win (-355)
