ROYAL ASCOT PICKS

Tuesday, June 16

Buckingham Palace Handicap: Cliffs of Capri is in top form of late and handled the seven-furlong distance last out without difficulty. It will be hard to beat probable favourite Daarik in this spot.

Queen Anne Stakes (G1): Circus Maximus for Aidan O’Brien takes on the likes of Fox Chairman, Duke of Hazzard, and upset chances One Master and Mohaather. Circus Maximus, by Galileo, was a Group 1 winner here at Ascot just a year ago.

Ribblesdale Stakes (G2): Trainer John Gosden has pre-entered two horses, with one of them unlikely to run, but both Frankly Darling and Miss Yoda have chances in here. Longshot Oriental Mystique could surprise the field as well.

King Edward VII Stakes (G2): O’Brien has six in the race including favoured Mogul for the Coolmore group, but Roger Varian could have his number with tough runner Valyrian Steel. David Simcock also starts Mohican Heights, who will be ridden by Andrea Atzeni.

King’s Stand Stakes (G1): Mighty runner Battaash will be well-backed to win yet again, but horses behind him could include Juddmonte’s Equilateral and the Roger Teal-rained Oxted. O’Brien’s Sergei Prokofiev is not to be ignored.

Duke of Cambridge Stakes (G2): Nazeef and Lavender’s Blue could do battle as the top fillies here with Nazeef winning four of five starts and Lavender’s Blue fourth in Group 1 company at Newmarket last fall. Terebellum will be more of a price for Gosden and has three wins in five tries.

Ascot Stakes: Verdana Blue takes on a big field including Diocletian from the Andrew Balding yard. Ralph Beckett has Moon King primed at a longer price.

Wednesday, June 17

Hampton Court Stakes: Berlin Tango is a classy sort and was in form when winning at Kempton two weeks back. Enemy was a juvenile winner here at Ascot in his debut last year and will appreciate the step up in trip. Hukum is a dark horse with a strong win over a mile at Kempton in November.

King George V Stakes: Favorite Moon at a longer price can make a mockery of his 78 handicap mark;the form of his last race at Wolverhampton has worked out very well and a line through a loss at Yarmouth behind Celstran gives Bodylinea chancewith fellow recent runner Arthurian Fable knocking on the door.

Prince of Wales’s Stakes (G1): The chief race on the program hasAidan O’Brien trained Japan favoured but Barney Roy can upset the top choice with a good run. Charlie Appleby trains the son of Excelebration for Godolphin, and William Buick will ride the two-time Meydan winner earlier this year.

Windsor Castle Stakes: Astimegoesby can give the first-season trainer George Boughey a day to remember. He set a blistering pace during his Newmarket debut but was outstayed, and now gets a drop in trip. American-based trainer Wesley Ward has two horses entered.

Gold Cup (G1): The prestigious Gold Cup, with the trophy historically presented by Queen Elizabeth II, could have one of the great fields. Stradivarius is always a threat in longer route races and ran an admirable third on his return last week at Newmarket. Kew Gardens, Broome, and Cross Counter are regular rivals in with a shot as well.

The latest odds can be found at William Hill’s racebook.

Commonwealth Cup (G1): Irish-bredThreatwas a Group 2 winner at Doncaster in September, then ran fifth behind Earthlight in the Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes (G1) but has three wins in six-lifetime starts and has been well prepared for this by Richard Hannon. Pierre Lapin for Roger Varian is unbeaten in two tries, including a Group 2 at Newbury in September.

Royal Ascot Betting Tips

Royal Ascot is a veritable onslaught of top-quality thoroughbred action. With eight Group 1 stakes races led by the Queen Anne, Gold Cup, Prince of Wales and St James Palace Stakes, there is simply no shortage of elite races to choose from. Over 300,000 spectators regularly go through the doors to enjoy the festivities, wearing required top hats and headpieces as well as dresses, skirts, and coattails. In 2020, formal attire will not be required for the first time, as spectators will not be allowed.

Outside of the Breeders’ Cup held in the United Stakes and Dubai Racing Carnival, few events compare in quality or stature to Royal Ascot. Like many big event days in racing, wagering on Royal Ascot provides bettors with a multitude of challenges and opportunities. The well-studied player can afford to be selective, opting to devote a larger percentage of his bankroll towards the best betting opportunities, while still reserving a fair amount of cash to enjoy the full spectrum of races. Players not as well-versed in European racing still have the luxury of generous odds produced by full and competitive fields.

It is important to remember that the best trainers and owners in Europe annually target the event, priming their runners for peak efforts, while runners from Australia, Japan, and the United States often travel to take on the English, French, and Irish stars. Trainers such as John Gosden, Aidan O’Brien, William Haggas, Mark Johnston, and Charlie Appleby do particularly well, as do jockeys Frankie Dettori, Ryan Moore, and Andrea Atzeni.

The unusual rounded-triangle shape of the track means that horses going a mile or six furlongs run down a straight course with no turns. This can affect your handicapping since some horses have experience with the course and others have never seen it before. The track is also undulating with both uphill and downhill sections calling on stamina in the best of horses.
