Kempton has remained on of the UK’s most popular jump tracks with races such as King George VI Chase and Christmas Hurdle while the flat racing conducted over the synthetic track represents the minor leagues of horse racing in England. Among insiders, the Kempton turf is known for being a good jumping surface over the full course of the year and is traditionally a speed-favouring strip.

Open to horses of all ages, the King George VI Chase is a three-mile race with a total of 18 fences to jump. The race was inaugurated in 1937 and is traditionally held on December 26. Horses able to race on or near the early lead are thought to have a great advantage in the King George. The Christmas Hurdle is a popular two-mile race with eight hurdles also held on December 26 for horses four years old and upward.

The great Kauto Star won the King George VI Chase a record five times, including four straight victories from 2006-2009. The brilliant jumper addes a fifth victory in 2011 and is immortalized with a statue in the parade ring at Kempton. Kauto Star also won the country’s biggest event, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, twice in 2007 and 2009.
