2020 Investec Derby Picks

English King is the likely favourite for the Epsom Derby, known as the Investec Derby in 2020. The son of Derby winner Camelot has won his last two starts, including the Derby Trial Stakes at Lingfield June 5.

He broke his maiden at Newcastle in November on the all-weather surface but is bred for the grass and for the distance. Ed Walker trains for B E Nielsen. Galileo, New Approach, Sea the Stars, and Pour Moi are recent Derby winners to sire Derby winners. Can Camelot join the club with English King?

Betway offers some of the best odds on English King.

  • Kameko will be heavily backed to beat him. The son of Kitten’s Joy is American-bred but has raced exclusively in England for trainer Andrew Balding. He has won three of five starts with two seconds, and was a Group 1 winner at Newmarket on June 6 in the prestigious QIPCO 2000 Guineas, the first leg of England’s Triple Crown. This is the second leg, and the step up in trip from a mile should not pose a problem.

If looking for a price, Pyledriver offers a lot of value.

The son of Harbour Watch is coming off a win in Royal Ascot’s King Edward VII Stakes (G2) over a class field at this same distance. William Muir trains the three-time winner, who won at seven furlongs and a mile as a juvenile. The fact that he has already successfully tackled the distance and won makes him a valuable price play.

Mogul is one of several runners from the Aidan O’Brien outfit. The son of Derby winner Galileo hasn’t won since September, but he was fourth in his return at Royal Ascot, beaten by Pyledriver. This was a Group 2 winner in Ireland last year and is the main hope for the Tabor, Smith, and Magnier outfit.

His stablemate is Vatican City, who was second behind the top three-year-old of the year, Siskin, in Group 1 company at the Curragh June 12. Siskin won’t be in this race, but Vatican City, by Galileo, is bred to stretch out and is from the female family of Giant’s Causeway. This is the half-brother to multiple Group 1 winner Gleneagles.

Bodog and MyBookie racebooks offer good value respectively on Mogul and Vatican City.

This colt, who has won twice and been second twice in four starts, won a listed stakes at Deauville on May 31 over 1 ¼ mile, and is bred to get the trip of the mile and a half.

Some betting selections for the 2020 Investec Derby:

    • $20 win on Pyledriver and Kameko
    • $5 each way on Ocean Atlantique and Vatican City

    Epsom Derby History

Epsom Downs is a left-handed course where flat racing is conducted exclusively. A chute in the home straight makes it possible to conduct 5-furlong sprint races.

A vastly undulating course, Epsom is unique in that its longer races - such as the Epsom Derby - require horses to navigate the terrain with major changes in elevation.

The Epsom Derby and Oaks are both conducted at the 12-furlong distance (1.5 miles) on a trip where the horses encounter a stiff downhill slop about 7.5 furlongs into the race before being challenged with sharp left-hand turn into the straight. Thus, horses with good tactical speed, agility, and endurance often make the best bets in such events.

The Epsom Derby began in 1780 and is the race that the Kentucky Derby was modelled after. Geldings aren’t allowed so as to ensure the Derby winners will be able to become stallions when retired from racing. Fillies are allowed, and six fillies have won it although none more recently than 1912. The most recently a filly has contested the race was 1998.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien has been tough to beat of late, winning five of the last eight runnings and seven overall, which ties him as the winningest trainer all time. His dominance in the race started with Galileo in 2001, and he won it with Anthony Van Dyck last year in a mild upset.

The great rider Lester Piggott piloted nine Derby winners over the years, starting with Never Say Die in 1954 and including the likes of Sir Ivor, Nijinsky, Roberto, and The Minsterel.

Frankie Dettori is considered by many to be the greatest jockey in Europe in modern times but has only won the Derby twice. He scored in 2007 with Authorized and 2015 with Golden Horn.

Sir Michael Stoute has won the race five times, first with Shergar in 1981 and as recently as 2010 with Workforce. Shergar took the race by a record ten lengths.

The Epsom Derby’s sister race is the Epsom Oaks. It will take place on the same card as the Derby in 2020, and is also run over 1 ½ mile. Anapurna won the race in 2019 for Frankie Dettori and John Gosden. Aidan O’Brien has won the race seven times, with son Donnacha O’Brien riding Forever Together to victory in 2018. The mare Enable won the race in 2017 and went on to win two Prix de l’Arc de Triomphes.

The 2020 Investec Derby (G1) will take place July 4 with a post time of 4:55 pm British Summer Time. Official entries will be declared on Monday, June 29.
