In addition to Aqueduct and Saratoga, Belmont is one of three major racetracks in the state of New York. The track annually holds a spring/summer meet from May to July as well as a fall meet that begins in early September and runs through the end of October.

While the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes is the track’s premier and best-known event, Belmont Park is also home to such elite grade 1 events such as the Metropolitan Handicap, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Champagne Stakes, Acorn Stakes, Mother Goose Stakes, Coaching Club American Oaks, and many more blue-chip events. All 12 Triple Crown winners completed the feat over the Belmont Park oval at the 1 1/2-mile distance known as the “Test of Champions.”

Countless thoroughbred immortals have proved their mettle in the track’s signature events with names like Ruffian, Seattle Slew, Secretariat, Man O’ War, Whirlaway, Easy Goer, and American Pharoah winning significant races at the track at some point in their careers. The Man O’ War Stakes and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic are the premier grass races held annually at Belmont.

Belmont Park Race Track Picks

Because of the sheer size of the Belmont track oval and the deep, punishing nature of its dirt surface, betting races at Belmont Park is a unique proposition indeed. Regardless of a player’s experience, the bettor looking for action at Belmont Park will benefit from understanding some of the track’s key nuances. For starters, all dirt races at Belmont Park run at a distance less than a mile and one-half are “one-turn” races. In essence, this means over 99% of the races run on the dirt will be one turn events where the starters begin on the backstretch of the track.

Given that races held a mile and one-sixteenth and over are two-turn events at every other track in North America, bettors considering horses shipping in from other tracks must be aware of this fundamental difference in configuration. To be sure, most horses in training have a preference when it comes to one or two-turn racing.

Another quirk to consider when betting Belmont, and particularly when considering horses who have never run at the track, is the surface itself. Known as “Big Sandy” the Belmont dirt is a deep surface that can fatigue runners quicker than many other surfaces. It is often fruitless to simply assume that a horse new to the surface will duplicate his form from other surfaces when, in fact, many runners simply do not take to the track willingly.

This is where the “horse for course” betting angle becomes even stronger. Runners who have proven their affinity for the track must be given extra consideration at Belmont Park. To a lesser degree, jockeys unfamiliar with the Belmont terrain often have trouble negotiating the sweeping turns and either move too soon or too late on their mounts due to this lack of familiarity.

Belmont Park Race Track Results

Of all the historic and noteworthy races at Belmont Park, there can be no discussion without starting with Secretariat’s astounding 31-length win in the 1973 Belmont Stakes. The horse many consider to be the best in the history of the sport finished the mile and a half in 2:24 flat – a time that remains untouched for the distance – to seal the Triple Crown.
