Washington Nationals: Max Scherzer continues his red hot run
Living up to the USD $210 million contract he signed in the offseason, Max Scherzer (8-5 ERA 1.76) has been near flawless over his last two starts. The numbers are jaw dropping as the Maximizer has allowed just one hit and zero runs, while recording 26 strikeouts, over his last two starts which were both complete game victories. Considered a dirty tactic by many, yours truly included, Scherzer lost his bid for a perfect game during his last outing. Pittsburgh Pirates pinch-hitter Jose Tabata took a pitch off his elbow when he intentionally leaned into a Scherzer slider with two out in the top of the ninth inning during the Nationals 6-0 victory over the Buccos this past Sunday.
Philadelphia Phillies: MLB cellar dwellers despite recently ended modest winning run
Thanks to a series-ending win over the St. Louis Cardinals, plus a pair of victories versus the New York Yankees, the Phillies won three games in a row for just the second time this season prior to getting crushed 10-2 in the Bronx last night. Philadelphia returns home sporting a 26-48 record and they trail the Nationals by a whopping 14.5 games in the NL East Division. Looking to break a streak of six consecutive loses, RHP Aaron Harang (4-9 ERA 3.41) heads to the hill for the Phillies tonight. June has been particularly rough for Harang as he has allowed 20 earned runs over 23.3 innings pitched during four starts this month. Sitting dead last in both categories, the Phillies 244 runs scored have been offset by 366 runs allowed – good for a MLB worst -122 RF/RA differential.
