The Viral Roundup – Blazin’ Jays Edition

Happy Monday! Welcome to a special TGIM go-around of The Viral Roundup. We’re your daily one-stop shop for all the big news, big buzz and big developments headlining a new day in the world of sports. In today’s edition: Toronto improves to only 1.5 games back in the AL East chase, Drew Willy gets hurt while the Bombers get rocked and things get very physical at a joint NFL practice.

Did You Hear?

The American League East sure feels different lately. The new look Toronto Blue Jays are now only 1.5 games back of the division leading Yanks and that’s thanks to a sweep that closed out in style on Sunday afternoon. The Jays (a +140 road moneyline favourite) blanked the Bronx Bombers 2-0 with Marco Estrada pitching shutout ball into the 7th with Toronto’s notoriously shaky bullpen closing things out. Josh Donaldson and Jose Bautista both went yard for the Jays in the victory. Toronto brings their eight game win streak into Oakland tomorrow, while travel to Cleveland for a set against the Indians.

We’re weeks away from the National Football League kicking off its regular season, but there was some exciting pro pigskin action over the weekend. The Washington Redskins and Houston Texans had an outbreak of brawling break out during a joint training camp session. Benches cleared as both sides threw punches and had an unexpected day of team bonding. Check out the highlights below. (By the way, the Texans are pegged as a 9/2 shot to win the AFC South and the Redskins are listed at 14/1 odds to top the NFC East.)

Did You Know?

- The Pirates continue to look fearsome in the National League. The Bucs completed three game sweep of the Dodgers on Sunday that boasted a monster nine run 8th inning and an overall 13-6 win. Andrew McCutchen cranked his 17th homer of the year and the Pirates find themselves five games back of the Cardinals in the NL Central.

- The Winnipeg Blue Bombers were absolutely pummeled this weekend. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats conquered their Manitoban guests and scored a 38-8 win that included pivot Zach Collaros going 20-32 with 280 yards and three TDs. The Bombers had much worse luck with their QB. Drew Willy left in the 3rd quarter after a hit that had the quarterback clutching his right knee.

Cris Cyborg’s camp says they’ve spoken about the prospect of a Rousey/Cyborg fight going down before 2015 is through. Supposedly, it’d be a 135 lb. tilt that would take place at Cowboys Stadium. UFC president Dana White has slammed the report as false. Ronda Rousey’s next opponent is expected to be Miesha Tate in a December fight for the bantamweight title. There’s been rumblings that a combo of that bout plus Conor McGregor versus Jose Aldo could be the formula in place to the make the elusive UFC Cowboys Stadium card a reality.
