Pittsburgh Pirates: Chipping away the Cardinals NL Central lead
Currently sitting 3.5 games behind St. Louis in the National League Central, the Pirates have not been this close to the division lead since they were two games out on April 27. Trailing the Cards by nine games on June 28, Pittsburgh is the hottest team in the Majors as they are 10-2 over their last twelve games. After St. Louis won the series opener 4-1 on Thursday, the Pirates won 5-2 on Friday and then walked off with a dramatic 6-5 win thanks to a two-run homerun by Andrew McCutchen in the bottom of 14th inning on Saturday. A combined 15 pitchers headed to the hill last night.
St. Louis Cardinals: Sitting on the top MLB perch at the All-Star break
Though they have stumbled some recently, St. Louis will head into the All-Star break as the best team in baseball. That said, the Cardinals can’t be happy that their nine game lead in the NL Central has shrunk by 5.5 games in just 13 days. Including their two losses in this series so far, the Cards have dropped eight of their last 13 matches. Despite being first and third in the MLB standings, the Cardinals and Buccos are tied for 18th overall with 350 runs scored. Pitching is the key for both clubs as St. Louis (2.67) and Pittsburgh (2.84) have the best team ERA marks in the Majors.
Pirates vs Cardinals MLB Call: Speaking of pitching, it’s a rare night as the Cardinals will not send a stud to bump in this contest. With Jamie Garcia sidelined until after the All-Star break, rookie LHP Tim Cooney (0-0 ERA 3.95) will face LHP Francisco Liriano (5-6 ERA 2.99) in the rumble of rubber. This is Cooney’s first ever start against the Pirates while Liriano gets his third crack at the Cards this season. The Buccos have lost Liriano’s last three starts versus St. Louis – including an 8-5 setback on May 8.
