2022 Masters Championship Recap

The 86th edition of the US Masters Golf Tournament took place from April 7–10, 2022 and featured some of the world’s most fantastic golfers. Great shot-making was on display all weekend.

Congratulations to Scottie Scheffler who claimed his 1st Major with his 2022 Masters championship victory.

From Friday onwards, Scheffler reigned supreme over the 2022 Masters, with his dominance culminating in him slipping on the coveted green jacket on Sunday. The 25-year-old, currently sitting pretty at the top of the world rankings, showed nerves of steel as he carded a 1-under 71 in the final round, ending the tournament at an impressive 10 under par, a comfortable three strokes ahead of his nearest rival, Rory McIlroy.

Scheffler was the only player in the entire field to break par in every round of the tournament, a feat that only the very best can achieve. Although Scheffler suffered a double bogey on No. 18, missing a pair of short-range putts, his lead was substantial enough to weather this small hiccup.

McIlroy gave it his all in the final round, tying the Masters’ final round record with a sensational 64, complete with a birdie chip-in from the bunker on No. 18. However, his valiant effort wasn’t enough to overtake the relentless Scheffler, who went on to claim his first-ever major victory. The world of golf will be watching with bated breath to see what the future holds for this talented young player.

What are the types of US Masters Golf Odds

Golf is a very exciting sport! Other than betting on the odds to win the US Masters outright, there are several other Vegas odds for the Masters:

Picking a winner at the Masters is no easy feat. Form and fitness play a big part in determining which golfers are likely to come close, but weather and course conditions can throw the form book out the window. Thankfully, you can find Masters Golf odds for players to finish in the top 20, which is slightly easier to predict.

One of the safest bets in this category is world number one Dustin Johnson, who has been one of the most consistent golfers on the tour.

Gone are the days where the Americans dominate the field at major tournaments. While South Africa’s Gary Player was the only non-American to win the Masters before the 1980’s, five of the last ten winners have been from overseas.

The Top European odds market is all about picking the best performer from Europe, and there are a number of big chances here. Rory McIlroy is returning to form, while Sergio Garcia is never far away and of course won the tournament in 2017. But of course, 2019 contender Francesco Molinari will be eager to take another shot at the green jacket.

Spaniard Jon Rahm has played some fantastic golf over the last 24 months and has become a familiar name in world’s top ten, while Justin Rose, who has come second at the tournament twice, is another name you should consider despite lacking somewhat in 2019.

This market is all about early momentum. Much like in horse racing, the first out of the blocks isn’t necessarily the one who will win the tournament, so it’s tricky to predict an early pacesetter.

Tricky, but not impossible. What you’re looking for here is an indication that a player plays his best golf in the first round, then slowly comes back to the pack. England’s Tommy Fleetwood is a good example – he shot a first round 65 at TPC Sawgrass, but followed up with a 67, 70 and 73. He wasn’t able to hold his lead, but he would have got you the cash if you had picked him in this market.

Picking the winning margin is never easy in a four round golf tournament, although we’ve pulled some stats to help you out. Since the tournament began in 1934, the breakdown of winning margins is as follows:

  • Playoff: 17
  • One stroke: 23
  • Two strokes: 19
  • Three strokes: 10
  • Four strokes: 6
  • Five strokes: 3
  • Six strokes: 1
  • Seven strokes: 1
  • Eight strokes: 1
  • Nine strokes: 1
  • Twelve strokes: 1

It’s unsurprising to see that one stroke is the favourite in this market, although it still presents decent odds at 3.50.

There have been 17 playoffs in 83 tournaments, so about a one-in-five chance that the tournament will head to extra holes.

Opening odds on YES to a tie are 4.00, which is fairly decent value when one considers 1 in 5 odds. Picking a winner from the full field is challenging, so you could do worse than then your money on YES to a tie.

The world was waiting for a fairy-tale performance from Tiger Woods, and he delivered in the most emphatic fashion. It’s been called one of the greatest comebacks. The outright market prior to the 2019 event showed that he was one of the top four chances in terms of odds, although it’s still hard to believe he added a fifth win.

He will remain one of the players most likely to excel at the tournament, while America’s Jordan Spieth and Bubba Watson are great picks here, and Sergio Garcia may also come close.

Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm are great picks here, and American Jordan Spieth may also come close.

Canadians 🍁 in the Field at the 2023 Masters

In recent years, players from up north have started to make more noise on the PGA Tour. There have been several tournaments won by Canadians in recent history, including the most recent stop on the PGA Tour: the Valero Texas Open. Corey Connors walked away victorious after a great demonstration of world-class ball striking.

Connors (+4500)  is joined by fellow countrymen Mackenzie Hughes (+30000), Adam Svensson (+25000), and Mike Weir (+200000) in this year’s Masters field. The four Canadians will be doing their best to represent this country on the biggest stage. Adam Hadwin and Nick Taylor are two other Canadians that barely missed out on the tournament.

After a victory at the Valero Texas Open, Connors currently has the lowest odds of any Canadian at +4500. He has shown the ability to get around Augusta National in the past and does have the crispy iron play needed to succeed at the course. His biggest challenge this week will be staying consistent with the putter.

Mike Weir is the only Canadian player to have ever won the Masters as he did so in 2003. Canadian golf fans are still waiting for that to happen for a second time and Connors represents the best chance this year with his recent run of good form.

US Masters 2023 Betting Picks

The favourite in the Masters 2023 odds market is defending champion Scottie Scheffler, which was unsurprising considering his recent play.

Three Players to Watch at the 2023 Masters

Every year, throughout the myriad previews, a few names emerge as the favorites. Whether by the sportsbooks, the purists, or the students of the game, these names are the ones that get the most attention when tee times begin to unfold.

Cameron Smith (+2200 to win)

Cameron Smith is one of eight members of the LIV Golf League that will be participating in The Masters this year. Smith looked like he was about to win it all just one year ago until his tee shot found its way into Rae’s Creek over on the 12th hole.

Smith is a strong candidate for a few reasons. He won The Open Championship last year just before moving to LIV Golf. He has one of the best short games of anyone in the field and never wavers, even in the face of disastrous moves like his Rae’s Creek shot.

Smith may not have the name power that some of the others out there do but he has shown he is more than capable of taking the green jacket. Don’t be surprised to see him on the short list of contenders come Sunday.

Smith also represents the best chance for any LIV Golf player to win the green jacket. You can be sure that the golfers from that tour will be wanting to prove themselves and that there will be extra pressure on Smith to perform.

Rory McIlroy (+700 to win)

Along with Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler, McIlroy has become part of the “Big Three” on the PGA Tour. McIlroy, in particular, has shown strong performances consistently throughout his career at Augusta despite never walking away as the winner. This is the one major that has avoided McIlroy throughout his career and the last one he needs to finish the career grand slam.

McIlroy has finished in the top 10 seven times in the last nine years and was last year’s runner-up behind Scheffler. He has looked great heading into tournament play and is one of the odds-on favorites to win it all.

McIlroy has done just about everything you can do as a pro. Can he finally get over the hump and make himself part of the hallowed Augusta National history?

Will Zalatoris (+3500 to win)

Zalatoris is one of the newer names in the game but he has made a major impact. He finished in the top-six at the US Open in 2020, his first appearance in a major. He followed that up by placing as runner-up at the 2021 Masters, losing by a single stroke. Oh, and he finished in the top six at Augusta last year, too.

Zalatoris, despite not having the pedigree that others do, has shown that he is a player. He has exceptional tee-to-green play and ball-striking. Putting has been a sore spot but if he can put the focus on it for The Masters, he could definitely walk away with the victory.

If you are going to ride a “dark horse” in this tournament, Zalatoris would be it. You can’t ignore what such a young player has already done in major situations. It just means that, sooner or later, he is going to find a way to get to the top.

Three Players to Shy Away from at the 2023 Masters

Just as there are players who thrive when the lights are their brightest, there are players who wilt when August National rolls around. There are a few premier names that always get mentioned but should perhaps lose your attention when The Masters come around. For better or worse, here are the three names that you should perhaps forget about when the time to bet comes.

Scottie Scheffler (+700 to win)

Wait, didn’t Scheffler win it all last year? How do you choose against a guy who has been there and done that before? With all due respect to Scheffler, who has firmly established himself as one of the best on the PGA Tour, it is history that is the problem.

The last time the defending champion walked away with a repeat victory came in 2002. Tiger Woods captured his third green jacket, firmly in the middle of perhaps the most dominant run in the history of not only the PGA Tour but golf history in general. The last time before that was Nick Faldo, who pulled off the back-to-back feat in 1990.

History is not on the side of Scheffler here. Only two players in the last 30 years have managed to pull off the back-to-back feat. Scheffler will have an uphill battle staring him down, though he is currently one of the players who seems best equipped to make it happen.

Dustin Johnson (+2500 to win)

Players known to fade the ball heavily have struggled in recent history. That is, of course, unless we are talking about lefties – Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson. Johnson, as a righty, fades the ball quite a bit, though he has parlayed that into a Masters Championship in the past.

Johnson is not going to flame out and embarrass himself. He’s been here and walked away as the green jacket winner. But with left-to-right faders having sight great success in the last decade or more, the odds certainly are not in Johnson’s favor.

Phil Mickelson (+20000 to win)

Before the serious golf heads scoff, listen. Sure, Mickelson is not considered to be a serious contender for The Masters this year. He is in his 50s and seems happier playing for his own amusement rather than trying to prove himself. He’s been to the mountain top and done it all.

That said, there are going to be more than a few bettors who see his name and instantly let nostalgia get the better of them. It has happened for years with Tiger Woods as well. But the simple fact is that, while Mickelson has a great record at Augusta, that was in the past.

Look for Mickelson to play well, maybe even put together a short run that makes him look dangerous. But the most likely scenario is that he is going to put together a middling 72-hole score that keeps him well out of contention. For casuals and the nostalgic, don’t fall into the same trap that Tiger laid for years. Stay away from Phil even if he has the pedigree that makes him seem like a great pick.

US Masters Top Betting Tips

We can’t stress how important research is to a successful golfing wager.

Around 100 golfers will take part in the Masters, and the tournament winner is rarely one of the favourites.

Patience is key

So what does that mean? In the first instance, you should hold onto your money before considering a bet on the outright market. Pre-tournament odds can sometimes have little or no relation to the way a tournament unfolds, particularly if weather is a factor.

Benefits of Live Betting

The biggest tip we can give you for betting on a major golf tournament is to bet live, either during or after the first round is complete. Study which golfers are handling the conditions, and watch the odds fluctuate (they will considerably). You may end up with lower odds for certain players, but you will have a greater chance of increasing your bank balance.

Emotive wagers

Additionally, a player like Tiger Woods is what we would call an emotive wager – he appears at fourth on the list of odds because of his name and reputation, but certainly wouldn’t be there if the list was based on form and the actual chance of them winning.

Study up!

Don’t forget that there are other major events throughout the year, and CSB is also a great source of information for the US OpenPGA Championship and The Open Championship.

How does the US Masters Golf work

The Masters is a typical stroke-play golf tournament where the lowest scoring player over four rounds is declared the winner.

Players will tee off at various times of the day, and believe it or not there will be slight advantages or disadvantages for players based on who they are playing with and when they start their round.

Out of a field of approximately 100, around half will be ‘cut’ after the first two rounds. Typically, the players eligible to continue to the final rounds will be in the top-50 on the leaderboard, or within ten strokes of the leader.

In the event that two or more players are tied at the end of the four rounds, a playoff will be enforced. This involves the leaders playing extra hole(s) in a sudden-death contest to determine the outright winner.

The History of the Masters

The Masters Golf tournament is a venerable event in the sport of golf, steeped in history and tradition. The tournament was the brainchild of legendary golfer Bobby Jones, who wanted to create a competition that would bring together the world’s best golfers on a level playing field. The tournament was first held in 1934 and was known as the Augusta National Invitational. The event was held at the Augusta National Golf Club, which Jones co-founded, and it was won by Horton Smith, who took home a prize of $1,500.

The tournament quickly became one of the most anticipated events on the golfing calendar, attracting the sport’s top players from around the world. In 1939, the tournament was renamed the Masters, and it has been known by that name ever since. The Masters is known for its iconic green jacket, which is awarded to the winner of the tournament. The jacket was first awarded to the winner in 1949 and has since become one of the most recognizable symbols in all of sports.

Over the years, the Masters has played host to some of the most memorable moments in golfing history. In 1986, Jack Nicklaus, who was 46 years old at the time, won his sixth Masters tournament, an incredible comeback for Nicklaus, who had not won a major championship in six years. The Masters has also seen its fair share of drama, with players like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson winning multiple championships in thrilling fashion.

In recent years, the Masters has continued to evolve, with the addition of a Women’s Amateur tournament in 2019, held at the Augusta National Golf Club. This move was widely hailed as a significant step forward for women’s golf and was seen as a sign of the tournament’s commitment to promoting the sport to a wider audience.

As we look forward to future tournaments, it is clear that the Masters will continue to be one of the most important events in golf. The tournament’s rich history and tradition, combined with its status as one of the sport’s most prestigious competitions, ensure that it will remain a showcase for the world’s best golfers and a celebration of the sport’s enduring appeal.

US Masters All-Time Champions

Jack Nicklaus is the all-time leader in terms of Masters championships, with six titles between 1962 and 1986. Of the active playing field, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are the leaders with 5 and 3 respectively.
