Founded in 1905, Chelsea FC is one of the most supported clubs in all of world football with a far-reaching and faithful fan base. Despite the popular belief that the club’s fans consist entirely of those supporting the team since they were bankrolled by billionaire Roman Abramovich, the West London club has a long and rich history in English football and holds the honour of being sixth on the list of all-time English football attendances.

Also known as the Pensioners, Chelsea has lifted the Premier League title six times in their history. The majority of their trophy success has come under the Abramovich ownership having won five of their six overall, Premier League titles since 2003. The club has won six FA Cups since the turn of the century, including last season’s and four out of a possible six between 2007 and 2012. Chelsea also established themselves in Europe, becoming the first London side to have won the UEFA Champions League (doing so in 2012). They are the only English club to have won all four major European trophies. Not only has the senior team been a paragon of success but so has their youth academy having won five consecutive FA Youth Cups.

At the beginning of this golden period, Chelsea spared no expense in bringing the best players and management to the club. Top-class players at the peak of their careers like Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres were added to a roster until the rise of Manchester City was easily the most expensive in the top flight. High profile managers including Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti have held the reigns during this period, although no manager has lasted more than three seasons in a cut-throat environment overseen by Abramovich. With 15 manager changes, the revolving door has not stopped, but the big money spending has.

Whilst transfer records are seemingly being broken every season, Chelsea has not been near the top of the net spend charts over the past half-decade. In fact in 2014/15, under Jose Mourinho, they became the only Premier League club ever to win the title with a negative net spend.

With Antonio Conte at the helm for two seasons, they averaged a net spend of about 40 million Euros per season, which was minuscule compared to their other Premier League rivals.

However, this past summer under the latest manager Maurizio Sarri they splurged on a couple of new players, including breaking their club’s transfer record on the young Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

But with Roman Abramovich currently not allowed in the UK, there is still much uncertainty towards the club’s future. Chelsea’s plans for a new stadium have been put on hold for the time being and they will continue to play their games at Stamford Bridge. Stamford Bridge is owned and controlled by ‘Chelsea Pitch Owners’ a non-profit organization, which prevents the club’s grounds from ever being sold to a property developer.

Ironically, Chelsea may finally have the team Abramovich always wanted, now that he can no longer be there to watch them play. Whereas under previous managers Chelsea was successful by means of defensive ruthlessness and offensive efficiency, Maurizio Sarri brings something totally opposite. What has become known as Sarri-ball, Chelsea plays a high tempo offensive game, based on possession and intricate, quick passes to break down opponents and create scoring chances.

No longer is it the club’s tendency to grind out results. Instead, they take the game to the opponent from the first minute with a style that is very pleasing on the eye.

After a poorly run summer by the front office, Sarri was brought in after the 2018 World Cup had concluded. But with only a couple of weeks to prepare for the campaign and 10 games under his belt this season thus far, Sarri’s principles already seem to be taking hold as Chelsea are among the Premier League leaders in all major offensive categories, particularly passing stats, and have not been conceding many goals either. If they can continue to progress, they may quickly return to being a powerhouse once again.

With a versatile roster, they should be able to rotate enough over the course of the season, but ultimately this team will go as far as Eden Hazard can take them. Widely recognized as the best player in the Premier League, Hazard is the one world-class player in Chelsea blue who can singlehandedly win games on his day.

The rise of Chelsea in the last two decades has created a wealth of rivalries across the English Premier League. Traditionally dominant clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United, in addition to the more contemporary giant that is Manchester City all recognize the Blues as a genuine threat to the success craved by their own fans. When these clubs meet you are normally treated to the highest level English Premier League has to offer, and you are also treated to some very generous odds as fans of each club throw cash at their favourite team, convinced of their success.

Closer to home, Chelsea’s longstanding London rivalries with Arsenal and West Ham produce classic fixtures, but their greatest local rivalry is with Tottenham. In the most recent years, Chelsea has knocked Tottenham off their pedestal by beating them in the League Cup final in 2014/15. When Spurs were chasing a Premier League title in 2015/16 and FA Cup final berth in 2016/17 it was also the Blues that brought an end to those dreams. Tottenham got a measure of revenge in the 2017/18 season by beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge for the first time since 1990 and sending them on a downward spiral that knocked them out of the Champions League spots

One thing is a certainty – watching Chelsea play is always an engrossing affair, and with great odds across a variety of lines on all Premier League fixtures, the experience becomes even more exciting!
