Bet On MLS Cup

The MLS finals feature the top playoff performers from each conference, occasionally resulting in a team that didn’t rank well in the regular season making it to the finals and even winning the MLS Cup. The most recent example of a team peaking at the right time were the Portland Timbers, who took the 2015 MLS Cup after finishing fifth overall, and third in their conference, taking out higher ranking teams in the process. This pattern repeated in 2016, with the Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders having to survive knockout rounds before proceeding through the rest of the conference.

MLS Cup history features west coast teams rising to the occasion more often than not, winning the majority of the championships. The LA Galaxy are the most successful side in MLS history, winning a total of five cups and appearing in nine – which is nearly half of all MLS finals. On the east coast, D.C. United is the winningest team, earning four MLS Cups in five appearances. Incredibly, the New England Revolution have lost all five of their appearances, including three consecutive finals – two of which ended in extra time, one of which ended in a shootout. They’re widely considered the Buffalo Bills of the league.

Since the MLS finals is a single match, unlike the conference finals which are determined by aggregate, the results are less predictable. When a team makes it to the finals, all it takes is one fantastic performance, or an underwhelming effort, to win or lose the Cup.

Similar to the Super Bowl, this format gives wagering fans an opportunity to sniff out great wagering value through potential upsets, which always yield a larger payout. One interesting betting opportunity are over/unders for finals games, as they tend to feature a slightly higher rate of scoring than regular season matches. After years of playing the MLS Cup at a neutral site, the league decided to award home-field advantage to the team with the highest point total during the regular season. Sides which play on their own pitch have a 5-2 record, representing a large advantage for home teams in this scenario. As a result, teams with a greater number of points now enjoy a huge boost in their odds of winning the big game.
