NHL Playoff Predictions: Penguins vs Senators Game 1
Top Stanley Cup chalk will face resilient longshots to open Round 3 of the 2017 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. Defending Cup Champion Pittsburgh is up against #16 Ottawa in the fight for the East Title. The Senators beat Boston and New York while the Penguins cruised past Columbus and Washington to get here. Game 1 is at 7:30 PM ET on May 13, 2017, at PPG Paints Arena in Pennsylvania.

NHL Eastern Conference Championship Series Overview

As was the case with Ottawa vs New York in the semifinals, we get an Atlantic vs Metropolitan Division duel to decide the Eastern Conference Stanley Cup representative. The winner of this series will face Nashville or Anaheim in the Showdown for Stanley. Since the Senators joined the Adams Division for the 1992-93 campaign, these teams have met 117 times in the regular season and the Penguins have a 65-43-9 edge. The Pens and Sens have also battled in 20 playoff games with the Steel City Crew holding a 13-7 advantage. Series Call: Penguins Win in Six Games.

Pittsburgh Penguins (Metropolitan Division #2 Seed) vs Ottawa Senators (Atlantic Division #2 Seed)

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Ottawa Senators Game 1 Preview and Prediction

Ottawa lost to Pittsburgh during the opening round of the playoffs in 2008 and 2010 in four and six games. The Sens and Pens last postseason meeting was during the 2013 semifinals when the Penguins smoked the Senators in five games by a combined 22-11 final score. In recent regular season play, the Penguins won four in a row (21-13) prior to the Senators winning two straight (4-1 and 2-1 SO) during the last six meetings. We are not putting much stock in the latter results.

Showing Championship caliber metal/resilience Ottawa has played two drama filled series during the second season. The Senators and Bruins played six one goal games and four of them went in OT – the Canadian Crew won three. The beat went on vs the Rangers as Canada’s last Stanley Cup hope erased a ton of in-game deficits en route to knocking out New York with a 4-2 series victory. D-Man Erik Karlsson is playing at an All-World level but he is playing an All-World team now.

Facing an “us against the world” scenario, which comes with being defending Champs, Pittsburgh has taken care of business as they crushed Columbus (4-1) by a 21-13 count in Round One. Down 3-1 in their semifinal series, Washington fought back but, as they have many times in the past, the Capitals crashed as the Penguins moved on with a 2-0 victory during Game 7. Evgeni Malkin (18) Sidney Crosby (14) Jake Guentzel (14) and Phil Kessel (13) have a combined 59 playoff points.

Penguins 210 Units (-210) Money Line Wager SportsInteraction

We felt experience would play a role in the Rangers vs Senators series and it did as New York trailed for just 13:10 of clock time but were down 3-2 after five games. If the Penguins continuously get up on the Senators – we can’t see the Pens melting down like the Rangers did – many times. If Pittsburgh can contain Karlsson, not to mention top playoff goal scorer Jean-Gabriel Pageau and playmaking veteran Clarke MacArthur, this series will be over quick. We like the Penguins at the Igloo and we are backing them with a 210 unit bet on the SportsInteraction (-210) money line.

NHL 2017 Stanley Cup Championship Futures Wagering Update

David vs Goliath comes to mind when looking at the Eastern Conference Stanley Cup futures odds as Pittsburgh and Ottawa are at the opposite ends of the spectrum. It’s been that way since early April as the Penguins pre-playoff line has dropped from (+800) to (+150) overall chalk. The Senators have been pups during both their series so far but their NHL title odds have dropped from a huge (+3300) price to just (+500) as they get ready for Sidney Crosby and the defending champion Penguins. SIA bookmakers also have Pittsburgh at (-370) and Ottawa at (+255) to win this series.

Mirror opposite to the East, there isn’t much separating Anaheim and Nashville in the Western Conference – on their overall and series odds. Anaheim has jumped from a sixth best (+1200) pre-playoff price to second favorites at (+240) while Nashville is a little ways back with a (+333) NHL Championship line. In a weird twist, the Predators are favorites over the Ducks to win the West Final by a (-143) to (+105) margin – strange indeed. The “Series Correct Score” betting options point to this being long series as the Predators winning by a 4-2 count is the lowest line at (+376) at SIA.

Whether you are betting on the NHL playoffs, the NBA postseason or the MLB regular season, the linemakers at SportsInteraction cater to Canadians – as they have for two decades now. The race to Super Bowl LII in the NFL is also prominent on the betting boards at SIA as bookmakers have already posted Week 1 odds (seriously) plus team win totals for the 2017 National Football League season. The Patriots at 11.5 wins are at the top while the Bears and 49ers at 4.5 victories are at the bottom of the scale.
