MLS Week 34 Predictions

MLS Week 34 Predictions
It’s the final week of the MLS regular season, and the playoff picture still isn’t set in stone. Six teams fight to make the postseason while the Supporters’ Shield and the Western Conference title remain up in the air.

Traditional wisdom suggests that teams should aim to be playing their finest soccer in the weeks approaching the playoffs. Teams such as the L.A. Galaxy and Toronto FC have been backing into the postseason, allowing opportunities to finish at the top of their conferences to slip through their fingers. During the last week of the season, these teams simply want to correct worrying trends in their game.

During week 44 of the MLS season, all eyes focus on teams fighting for playoff spots or positions at the top of their conference. FC Dallas looks to fend off the surging Colorado Rapids, while Philadelphia, New England, Salt Lake, Seattle, Portland and Kansas have the chance to validate their ticket into the postseason.

Week 34 MLS Predictions

The picks of the week before the postseason focuses mostly on teams which need to perform well to save their 2016 MLS regular season. Top contenders already at the peak of their conferences have less to lose, with the exception of FC Dallas and the Rapids from the western conference.

FC Dallas vs. LA Galaxy Prediction

BET L.A. Galaxy @ +155 at Bet365 Sportsbook

With the injury to Mauro Diaz, FC Dallas has to deal with the misfortune of being short staffed during the week they need to clinch the Supporters’ Shield. While the L.A. Galaxy haven’t exactly impressed to finish the last couple of months of the MLS regular season, there’s a good chance that home advantage and injuries will help L.A. win a pressure-free game at home before the playoffs begin.

Houston Dynamo vs. Colorado Rapids Prediction

BET Colorado @ +-179 at BetOnline Sportsbook

The Colorado Rapids have been playing some of the cleanest soccer in the MLS over the past couple of months, giving them a chance to pull off an unlikely come-from-behind Supporters’ Shield win. There’s little chance that Houston Dynamo will be able to repel the Rapids, especially when they’re playing on the road against a highly motivated and skilled squad.

Real Salt Lake vs Seattle Sounders FC Prediction

BET Seattle @ -193 at Sports Interaction Sportsbook

Real Salt Lake had quite a few chances to clinch a spot, but now find themselves in the difficult position of having to win in front of a boisterous Seattle crowd which would prefer that their team makes the postseason instead. Truth is that it appeared impossible for RSL to be in this position, but scoring a single goal in more than a month will submarine even the best of teams. Expect Seattle to drive the final nail in the coffin for RSL’s season, much to the delight of Sounders faithful.

Portland Timbers vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC Prediction

BET Vancouver @ +160 at William Hill Sportsbook

There’s a very real possibility that the Timbers will miss the postseason after their MLS Cup victory last season. They’ve won three of their last five games, but need to find a way to earn their first road win without a couple of key contributors. There’s little chance that Vancouver will be happy to let Portland waltz all over them, and easy opportunities to earn points will haunt the Sounders as they fall out of the postseason.

Philadelphia Union vs. New York Red Bulls Prediction

BET Philadelphia @ +180 at Bet365 Sportsbook

The Union aren’t good enough to beat the Red Bulls in New York under normal circumstances, but the Red Bulls have all but clinched the top spot of the eastern conference, so they’re much less likely to risk injury by competing as hard as possible. This will allow Philly’s horrible defence to remain adequate to clinch a playoff birth, while New York gives their stars a well-earned day off.
