Belmont Stakes Day Bets

As race day draws closer, handicappers will be keeping an eye on updated Belmont odds on the contenders and will be considering multiple betting options such as Win, Place, and Show as well as exotics such as exactas, trifectas, superfectas, and multi-race wagers.

The Belmont Stakes Day card on Saturday, June 5 will feature eight stakes races. Those include three Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In races, which award their winners a free berth into a Breeders’ Cup Championship race later this year.

The Jaipur (G1) is one of the biggest turf sprints of the year. Its winner earns a bid to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Australian-bred mare Oleksandra, trained by Neil Drysdale, beat males in the 2020 edition of the Jaipur. Trainer Christophe Clement has been one to watch in the Jaipur in recent years; he won three straight editions from 2016 through 2018 with Pure Sensation and Disco Partner.

The Ogden Phipps (G1) awards its winner a bid to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1). It has been won by distaff stars like Midnight Bisou, Songbird, Abel Tasman, and Close Hatches in recent years, and always draws a field of important filly and mare dirt runners.

A bid to the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) awaits the winner of the Metropolitan Handicap (G1), which is also one of the biggest stallion-making races in the country. Recent winners who are successful at stud include Frosted, Palace Malice, and Quality Road. Older winners who also became major stallions include Ghostzapper, Langfuhr, Holy Bull, and In Reality.

How to Bet the Belmont Stakes

Betting on the Belmont Stakes usually comes down to selecting a talented three-year-old who can both go the full distance and isn’t too tired from the rigorous prep schedule in the spring. The Belmont is notorious for recent upsets, with double-digit payout winners regularly outlasting the favourites down the stretch.

It is a myth that closers perform better in the long straightaway at Belmont; in reality, speed is often king as controlling the pace over the extra-long racetrack configuration results in plenty of winners. A late-running closer often struggles in the lane compared to a horse who has been either leading or is sitting just behind the pace to pounce.

It is wise to evaluate how the track is playing, given that on some major race days the track and be harder and faster. Weather plays a role in picking a Belmont winner as well since the track can play either fast or slow depending on the amount of rain.

Whether you are making a future bet or waiting for the live odds on raceday, you can bet your Belmont selection to Win, Place or Show as a single bet, a combination of two places or right across the board. After making a Win bet, think of a Place or Show bet as a “saver” and consider the odds. Horses at +300 or lower should be bet only to win, up to +600 to Win and Place, and +700 and above to Win and Show.

On race day, Belmont Park will be offering some type of multi-race bet that will include the Belmont Stakes, most likely Pick3, Pick4 and Pick5, where you try and get the winner in three, four or five straight races. Usually when making these kinds of bets you want to “key” on one horse as a single Win bet in one of the races, and then choose two or three other horses in the other races to fill out the bet.

To key one horse and use three others in a $2 Pick3 bet would cost $18: (1 x 3 x 3) = 9 x $2=$18.

Exactas, trifectas and superfectas are bets where you pick the first two, three or four horses to finish in order in the race. While you can make these all straight wagers with single horses in each spot – for example 2/3 in that order in an exacta, 2/3/4 in a trifecta or 2/3/4/5 in a superfecta, the better strategy is to “box” these kinds of bets to give multiple combinations on the same horses.

All-time Belmont Stakes Winners

When it comes to the subject of the best horses ever to win the Belmont Stakes, 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat is always the first name that comes up. Not only did he set a record in winning the race by an incredible 31 lengths, but he also set the race record time at 2:24. Given that the second-fastest time in the 45 years since then is a full two seconds slower, it’s a record that may never be broken.

More recently, American Pharoah in 2015 scored an emotional win when he took the Belmont after sweeping the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, becoming the first horse in 37 years to claim the US Triple Crown. Just three years later, Justify replicated his stablemate’s feat, completing the Triple in 2018.
