The Viral Roundup – Rex’s Revenge Edition
Did You Hear?
Rex Ryan’s return to the Meadowlands went swimmingly. The ex-Jets coach turned Buffalo saviour was able to beam after his Bills (a three point underdog) pulled out a 22-17 road win on Thursday Night Football. Buffalo took a 22-3 lead deep into the 3rd quarter before the Jets fought back with a pair of late touchdowns to amp up the drama. (The Bills D came up big with a goal-line stand to prevent a complete collapse.) New York would have had a much better shot at victory if they didn’t gift the Bills four turnovers over the course of the game including two Ryan Fitzpatrick picks. LeSean McCoy had a great outing for the Bills last night. He rushed 112 yards on the ground and racked up 47 through the air while looking like the Shady everyone knows and (depending on your allegiance) loves.

UFC 193 goes down this weekend in Melbourne, Australia. The card’s highlighted by two marquee matchups including one featuring quite possibly the biggest MMA star in the sport’s history. Welterweight champ Ronda Rousey is a massive -2000 favourite to hold onto her belt in the main event versus decorated boxer Holly Holm. (Do you imagine Miesha Tate will be watching?) The other big attraction is undefeated phenom Joanna Jedrzejczyk defending her belt against Canadian challenger Valerie Letourneau. Oddsmakers have Jedrzejczyk as a whopping -2250 fave to win. As part of the UFC’s huge hype machine, they’ve had tons of videos tied to this weekend’s action. Here’s a funny clip of UFC fighters doing their best to sort out Aussie slang.
Did You Know?
- Golden State are now the fourth defending champ in NBA history to start the year at 10-0. Steph Curry continued his superhuman play this season by scoring 46 in a 129-116 thumping of the Minnesota Timberwolves. (The Warriors were favoured by ten-and-a-half going in.) Draymond Green also had a quality outing providing 23 points, 12 assists and 8 rebounds for Golden State. The streak can build tomorrow when the Warriors host Brooklyn in Oakland.
- The New York Rangers have won seven straight. The Stanley Cup contender doubled up on a banged-up Blues squad at Madison Square Garden to the tune of 6-3. St. Louis netminder Jake Allen got the hook after giving up three goals on five shots in the first period, including Mats Zuccarello’s eighth marker of the year. The Rangers head to Ottawa tomorrow to face the Sens, while the Blues look to bounce back at home against the rival Blackhawks.
- Justin Abdelkader will be wearing the wheeled wing for a really long time. The 28-year-old Michigan born forward has signed a seven year extension with the Red Wings valued at about $4.25 million a year. Abdelkader has scored seven points in fifteen games this year and has spent his entire career in Detroit.
- Maybe Big Ben will play this Sunday after all. Initial reports had it that Pittsburgh were expecting Landry Jones to start against Cleveland this week, but Ben Roethlisberger is out of his walking boot early. Will he be the Steelers QB for Week 10? It still sounds like Pittsburgh’s leaning towards Jones for health reasons, but we’ll just have to wait and see. The Steelers are favoured by five against the Browns this weekend.
