The Viral Roundup – A Little Something Extra Edition

The 2015 World Series began with the longest Game 1 in the Fall Classic’s history. Eric Hosmer’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 14th provided the Royals with the walkoff run in a wild 5-4 victory over the Mets. New York had a 4-3 lead headed into the bottom of the 9th but were forced into extras courtesy of a clutch Alex Gordon solo shot. Chris Young earned the W for KC thanks to his mound work in the final three innings and Bartolo Colon is saddled with L for giving up the sac fly that wrapped up the game. Game 2 is scheduled for tonight with Jacob deGrom on the hill for the Mets (who are a -114 road moneyline favourite) and the Royals counter with Johnny Cueto.

The NBA began its regular season last night with a three game slate (more on the big games below), so why not soak in this delightfully ridiculous season preview video crafted by Jason Gallagher of Grantland. Set to “Do You Hear the People Sing” from Les Miserables, it’s the over-the-top hype-up you deserve.
Did You Know?
- Welcome to the NBA head coaching ranks, Fred Hoiberg. Chicago’s new coach scored a win in his debut as the Bulls (a one-and-a-half point home favourite) topped the defending Eastern Conference champs from Cleveland 97-95. Nikola Mirotic scored 19 points for the Bulls while LeBron contributed 25 points and 10 rebounds in a losing cause. The Cavs just couldn’t connect from beyond the arc on Wednesday going 9-29 from three point land.
- St. Louis and Tampa Bay clashed in Missouri in what might be a Stanley Cup Finals preview. Jake Allen stopped 26 shots and Scott Gomez notched his first marker of 2015-16 as the Blues skated away with a 2-0 victory. Speaking of the Blues, they’ve invited Martin Havlat and Dainius Zubrus to try out for roster spots as Jaden Schwartz and Paul Stastny sit on the shelf with injuries.
- The Texans have cut Ryan Mallett from their roster. Houston coach Bill O’Brien reportedly wanted the QB off the team after he missed the team’s charter flight over the weekend, but the decision wasn’t officially made until Tuesday. Mallett battled with Brian Hoyer in camp for the starting quarterback position with neither QB doing a remarkable job this year. (By the way, Hoyer’s now the only active pivot on the roster.) Mallett threw 3 TDs and 4 picks in play this year for the 2-5 Texans. Houston are a 4.5 point favourite versus Tennessee on Sunday.
- It looks like Big Ben’s likely to return to the Steelers on Sunday. Pittsburgh expect Ben Roethlisberger to start at quarterback for the team’s huge AFC North showdown versus Cincinnati where the Bengals are a one point road underdog. Roethlisberger was sidelined for four weeks with a bruised MCL and the team’s gone 2-2 in his absence with Mike Vick and Landry Jones filling in as substitutes.
