The Viral Roundup – MadBum Mows ‘Em Down Ediiton

Did You Hear?

The Giants are keeping chase in the NL West and Wild Card races and star pitcher Madison Bumgarner turned in a stellar outing on Thursday. The reigning World Series MVP tossed 12 Ks in 6 innings to lead San Francisco to a 9-1 home victory over the Cubs. (Bumgarner’s now a robust 16-6 on the season.) With the series wrapped up, San Francisco is set to host a big three game set against the Cards. Chicago’s next dance partner? The NL West leading Los Angeles Dodgers.

Did You See?

The Oregon Ducks have unveiled a parody of that infamous University of Alabama sorority video. The school’s mascot is inviting football fans to Auzten Stadium to pledge their allegiance to “the best house at Oregon.” It’s silly, it’s funny, there’s bubbles involved, etc. The Ducks are currently slotted as a 22/1 shot to win the National Championship and will begin their 2015 campaign next Saturday when they host Eastern Washington.

Did You Know?

- The Dodgers blanked Cincinnati on Thursday afternoon and that shutout was absolutely necessary. Los Angeles escaped with a 1-0 win in Ohio buoyed largely by Cy Young contender Zach Greinke’s strong seven inning performance against Cincy’s bats. (He’s now 14-3 on the year.) The sole slice of run scoring came courtesy of a Justin Turner arriving home in the aftermath of Yasmani Grandal hitting into a double play. The Dodgers emerged with the W but they may be without Adrian Gonzalez in the future. The first baseman exited yesterday’s game with a bruised knee.

- Injuries absolutely decimated the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2015 NBA Playoffs and it looks like their effect may continue to linger well into the regular season. The Cleveland Plains Dealer reports superstar guard Kyrie Irving will be taking it slow in his return to the lineup following knee surgery. The paper says there’s a slim chance that Irving will be back on the court by the season opener and cites one source claiming that he may not return until January. Irving provided a shade under 22 points-per-game for Cleveland in 2014-15 while averaging 5.2 assists a contest. At the moment, the Cavs are listed as an 11/4 wager to win the NBA title in 2016.

- The St. Louis Blues without forward Patrik Berglund for a spell. The 27-year-old Swede will be undergoing shoulder surgery today for an injury he sustained during training. Berglund, who scored 27 points in 77 games last season, will be re-evaluated in four months. Elsewhere in St. Louis roster news, the club has signed veteran Scott Gomez to a professional tryout contract. Oddsmakers peg the Blues as a 14/1 Stanley Cup contender.

- Bellator 141 is set to go down tonight in Temecula, California. The evening’s marquee attraction features Melvin Guillard doing battle with Brandon Girtz in a lightweight bout. Guillard, a longtime MMA vet, is pegged as a strong -350 favourite to win.
