Rookie Greg Bird hit career home runs one and two to give the Yankees a home victory on Wednesday afternoon. New York (the -165 moneyline favourite) edged Minnesota 4-3 thanks to Bird’s pair of two run blasts and continue to lead the Blue Jays in the chase for AL East supremacy. Starter Nathan Eovaldi had a strong seven inning performance at Yankee Stadium to improve his 2015 win-loss total to a handsome 13-2. New York’s victory completed a three game sweep of the visiting Twins and now the Yankees will begin a four game home stretch versus Cleveland.

As we continue the agonizing countdown until the start of the NFL regular season, we’ll grip onto any little thing that can make the wait more tolerable. This week’s distraction? A “brawl” at a joint practice between the Rams (currently a 50/1 Super Bowl hopeful) and the Cowboys (a 14/1 shot). Not much actually happened beyond aggressive shoving but star wideout Dez Bryant got smacked and lost his earring in the process.
Did You Know?
- The Dodgers continue their push for the NL West crown. Los Angeles has reportedly knocked out a deal that will see Chase Utley join their infield. The veteran (now ex) Phillie second baseman is said to be headed west in exchange for two minor league players. Utley’s stats were miserable for the bulk of this year, but he’s caught fire since returning from the DL. The 36-year-old has hit .484 after coming back on August 7. By the way, the Dodgers lost to Oakland 5-2 in yesterday’s interleague tilt.
- Mitch Moreland, Mike Napoli and Elvis Andrus all smacked homers as Texas (the -125 moneyline home favourite) thumped Seattle 7-2 in Arlington. Rangers starter Derek Holland tossed six strikeouts in 6+ innings for the winning side and tonight they’ll send Martin Perez to the mound for their series opener in Detroit.
- The Carolina Panthers have gotten some miserable injury news. Their #1 wideout Kevlin Benjamin’s 2015 campaign is already over. The second year wide receiver tore his ACL in practice yesterday and that spells trouble for Carolina’s offensive options. Last year, Benjamin had 1000+ yards receiving and 9 TDs.
- The Philadelphia 76ers continue to be a magnet for misery. For the second straight season, center Joel Embiid will be out of the lineup with a foot injury. The Kansas alum was drafted third overall in the 2014 NBA Draft and hasn’t played a single regular season game for the franchise that selected him.
