The National Hockey League dropped the puck on a brand new season last night with four games on the bill. The defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks started off their new campaign with an ugly first period and opening game loss. Chicago, a -130 moneyline home favourite, were lit up for three goals in the opening frame to ultimately lose 3-2 to the New York Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves for the Blueshirts and the club enjoyed a pair of assists from J.T. Miller. Moderate consolation for Hawks fans? The game was preceded by a Stanley Cup banner raising cermony.

It’s fair to say that the UFC know their way around crafting a quality promo. That said, their latest hype generating clip is in a league of its own. A new lengthy advert has been unveiled to trumpet the coming of UFC 193 in Australia. The clip showcases a young Ronda Rousey and a young Holly Holm on their life’s journey to next month’s main event fight in Melbourne. It’s a cinematic slice of hype that we’re totally into and you need to give it a watch. Rousey is a colossal -1300 favourite heading into the bantamweight championship bout.

- The Pittsburgh Pirates may have been a juggernaut in the regular season, but all it took was a pitching masterpiece from Jake Arrieta to end their campaign at Game 163. Arrieta tossed a complete game shutout with 11 Ks included as Chicago blanked Pittsburgh 4-0. Kyle Schwarber and Dexter Fowler both had round-trippers for the Cubs and they advance from the Wild Card to a Division Series showdown with NL Central champions St. Louis.
- Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck says he expects to play in tonight’s game against the Houston Texans. The Colts, who are considered a single point road underdog, scored a 16-13 OT victory over Jacksonville with 40-year-old veteran Matt Hasselbeck substituting for the absent Luck. A shoulder injury has sidelined Indy’s franchise pivot and he’s still listed as questionable with this AFC South matchup looming.
- The flooding that’s devastated South Carolina has prompted the Gamecocks to head to a new venue for their Saturday showdown versus #7 LSU. The game will now take place in Baton Rouge and the status of South Carolina’s October 17 home clash against Vanderbilt is still to be determined. LSU and their superstar rusher Leonard Fournette are currently considered a 13 point favourite versus the Gamecocks.
- FIFA’s ethics committee (yes, they have one) has reportedly recommended that the federation’s controversial president Sepp Blatter be suspended for 90 days. The ruling has been described as pending.
