Did You Hear?
This year’s NHL free agent crop left something to be desired, but that didn’t mean there wasn’t a blockbuster bit of relocation on Wednesday. The Maple Leafs have dealt All-Star forward Phil Kessel (plus some odds n ends) to Pittsburgh in exchange for Nick Spaling, Scott Harrington, Kasperi Kapanen and a pair of picks. (Also of note: Toronto will be eating a chunk of Kessel’s salary.) This means the Pens now boast Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel all on the same roster. Will it sort out their roster depth issues? Nope, but this is still a notable addition. Pittsburgh were listed as a 29/2 shot to win the Stanley Cup before this transaction took place.
Did You See?
Did you catch Marshawn Lynch diving into a pool of Skittles on Conan this week? Well, it happened and it was every bit as glorious as you might imagine.
Did You Know?
- There wasn’t too much glamour to Wednesday’s free agency moves. Mike Ribeiro re-signed with Nashville, Paul Martin took his talents to San Jose, Mike Green’s now a Red Wing, Michael Frolik heads west to Calgary and Matt Beleskey will be plying his trade in Boston. Outside of the afforementioned Kessel deal, the most interesting piece of NHL news yesterday was the Rangers officially announcing that Glen Sather will step down as GM (but stay as team president) with assistant GM Jeff Gorton taking over the role.
- The NBA offered up way more bang for everybody’s July 1 free agency buck: Kevin Love inked a five year pact worth $110 million to stay in Cleveland, Jimmy Butler’s getting paid a huge sum to stay in Chicago with Mike Dunlevy lured to the Bulls too. Atlanta watched DeMarre Carroll exit Georgia to start a new life in Toronto and brought Tiago Splitter on in a deal with San Antonio. The biggest news of all might be Anthony Davis getting $140 million in a five-year extension with New Orleans.
- The Halos might be crawling back into the AL West pennant race but things are a mess off the diamond. Angels GM says he’s resigned in the wake of increased tension between himself and team manager Mike Scioscia. (For what it’s worth, the Angels refused to confirm the exit until much later in the day.) In last night’s action, the Angels (a 25/1 shot to win the World Series) fell 3-1 to Nathan Eovaldi and the New York Yankees.
