The Viral Roundup – Captain Kirk Edition
Did You Hear?
Just when you think Washington’s ridiculous QB situation couldn’t get any more messy… Kirk Cousins has been pegged by coach Jay Gruden as the team’s starting quarterback for 2015. It’s a move that raises all sorts of questions about what will become of former franchise pivot Robert Griffin III. Gruden says the decision isn’t due to RG III’s health issues, but instead stated “it’s Kirk’s team.” It also hasn’t been sorted out if Griffin will be the backup or plummet to #3 (behind Colt McCoy) on the team’s depth chart. Cousins threw 10 TDs and 9 picks in six contests in 2014 for 1,710 yards. Washington is currently listed as a massive 125/1 longshot to win the Super Bowl this winter.

The Toronto Blue Jays have been uncorking homers this season like they bought them in bulk at Costco. Toronto’s led the league in round-trippers and now some kind soul has created a video featuring every homer set to Johnny Cash’s version of “God’s Gonna Cut You Down.” It’s a fantastic display of power and editing with so many jacks to roll with. The Jays are currently listed as a 15/4 wager to win this fall’s World Series.
Did You Know?
- Bartolo Colon tossed nine strikeouts and gave up only four hits in an eight inning performance as the Mets topped the Phillies 3-1. Curtis Granderson smacked his 23rd homer of the season in the win, the first of three games hosted by New York at Citi Field. Tonight’s matchup between the two NL East teams features the Mets going in as a very strong -215 moneyline home favourite.
- There were two pieces of noteworthy business coming out of Western New York today. The first was the announcement that running back Fred Jackson has been let go by the Buffalo Bills. The veteran had been a staple of the club for nine years and appears behind only Thurman Thomas and O.J. Simpson in the leading team rusher tally. The Bills recently acquired LeSean McCoy and will begin a new season with Rex Ryan at the helm which probably helped move the decision along. Also, the Bills have named a starter at quarterback for Week 1. ESPN is reporting that Ravens import Tyrod Taylor has won the QB job, beating out Matt Cassel and EJ Manuel. Taylor’s first regular season challenge at pivot will be against the Indianapolis Colts. Buffalo are listed as a 50/1 Super Bowl threat this season.
- Having the Raiders cut you loose never looks great on a resume. Former #3 overall pick Trent Richardson has been released by Oakland and will be looking to be a part of the rushing game elsewhere. After a relatively promising rookie season featuring 950 rushing yards in 15 games, Richardson’s struggled to provide real value in the National Football League. By the way, the Raiders are considered a 75/1 Super Bowl shot.
