The Viral Roundup – Every Word Means No-No Edition

The Viral Roundup – Every Word Means No-No Edition

Good morning! Welcome to a brand new go-around of The Viral Roundup. We’re your daily one-stop shop for all the big news, big buzz and big developments headlining a new day in the world of sports. In today’s edition: Seattle sees a no-no, the Browns might be interested in Ray Rice and the PGA Championship tees off today.

Did You Hear?

Ladies and gentlemen, we have our fourth no-hitter of 2015. Seattle’s Hisashi Iwakuma gave up zero hits and tossed seven strikeouts as the Mariners (the -144 moneyline home favourite) topped the Orioles 3-0. Iwakuma’s no-no is the second in MLB history by a Japanese-born pitcher (Hideo Nomo was the first) and the fifth ever by a Mariner. It’s a bright spot in an Ms season that has once again been underwhelming. Seattle is seven games below .500 and looking up at the Astros and Angels in the AL West standings.

Did You See?

One beautiful (and somewhat horrifying) thing about the internet is that you can always dig up amazing footage of things that might otherwise be lost to history. Check out this insane finals match from the 2007 Rock, Paper, Scissors League Championship. (h/t USA Today’s FTW) It’s intense, ridiculous and bizarrely compelling.

Did You Know?

- Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine told Sports Illustrated that they’ve had discussions about possibly bringing in former Ravens running back Ray Rice. The prospect of bringing in the disgraced rusher (Rice missed the 2014 season as he was in the middle of a domestic abuse scandal) is only in the early stages, but it does indicate that at least one NFL team is considering Rice as an option.

- The 97th PGA Championship begins today at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. 22-year-old phenom Jordan Spieth enters as the favourite (+550) with oddsmakers liking his chances of adding major #3 to his 2015 campaign. Defending champ Rory McIlroy is considered a +900 wager as he returns from injury. Dustin Johnson (+1200), Jason Day (+1400) and Bubba Watson (+1400) are also considered contenders. Elsewhere in the world of golf brand names, Tiger Woods is at +4000 bet with Phil Mickelson in the same spot.

- The schedule for the 2015-16 NBA season has been released in full. A press release accompanying the schedule notes that the total number of four games over five nights sets have been cut by more than 60 percent. The NBA will begin its new season on October 27 with Cleveland playing Chicago and New Orleans visiting the defending champs from Golden State. The Cavs are considered an 11/4 shot to win the 2016 NBA title, but San Antonio (3/1), Golden State (5/1) and Oklahoma City (17/2) all have relatively favourable odds too.
