The Viral Roundup – Let ‘Er Buc Edition

Happy Thursday! Welcome to a brand new go-around of The Viral Roundup. We’re your daily one-stop shop for all the big news, big buzz and big developments headlining a new day in the world of sports. In today’s edition: The Pirates club the Cubs, the Angels come up big in the bottom of the 9th and Arian Foster’s scheduled for repairs.

Did You Hear?

Pittsburgh has driven a stake through the heart of Chicago’s six game win streak. The Pirates (a -140 moneyline home favourite) topped the Cubs 7-5 yesterday and are currently in the driver’s seat in the NL Wild Card race. Andrew McCutchen notched a homer and a sacrifice fly in the victory, while Cubs rookie Kyle Schwarber went 2-4 with a tater in a losing cause. Chicago will look to rebuild their win streak tonight versus San Francisco and the Pirates face an NL West challenger of their own with a set against the Los Angeles Dodgers that begins tomorrow.

Did You See?

Go ahead, start drooling. The brand new trailer for FIFA 16 has arrived and we all get a sneak peek at what will dominate every hour of lives from September 25 onward. (Soundtracked by Etta James singing “At Last” no less.) Here’s the preview for your viewing pleasure.

Did You Know?

- The struggling Los Angeles Angels snagged an important comeback win on Wednesday. The Halos rallied from a 3-1 deficit to rack up three runs in the bottom of the 9th for a 4-3 victory over Cleveland. A two run single from C.J. Cron knotted things up and a bases loaded wild pitch from Cody Allen. It was the first time in all of 2015 that the Angels came back after falling behind going into the 9th. The AL West club was on a six contest losing streak before this three game set where they topped the Indians 2-1 in the series.

- Houston Texans running back Arian Foster has surgery planned for Friday to deal with his injured groin. It’s unclear how long Foster will be out of the lineup, but he appears likely to miss the start of the season. (There’s even a chance he could be on the team’s short-term injured reserve with the rusher out for a big chunk of 2015.) The 28-year-old back collected 1,246 yards on the ground in 2014 and scored 13 TDs (8 rushing, 5 recieving) in a 9-7 campaign that landed Houston in the AFC South’s #2 position. The Texans are currently projected as a 50/1 shot to win the Super Bowl in 2016.

- The Utah Jazz may have lost Dante Exum for an extended stretch. The team’s #5 draft pick in 2014 suffered a knee injury while playing for the Australian national team in international play. The Jazz say they will evaluate the guard’s condition when he returns to Salt Lake City. Exum averaged a little over 22 minutes-per-game for Utah last year and scored 4.8 points-per-game while providing about two-and-a-half assists per contest. The Jazz are pegged as a distant 80/1 shot to win the 2016 NBA Championship.
