Dealing for Troy Tulowitzki wasn’t enough for the Toronto Blue Jays. Canada’s lone Major League Baseball franchise made another major deal this week with acquisition of superstar Tigers pitcher David Price. The deal gives Toronto the pitching help it’s so desperately needed and it features three valuable pitching prospects going the other way. (Considering GM Alex Anthopoulos is considered to be on the hot seat this season, these splashy moves sort of make sense.) Price has gone 9-4 with Detroit this season with a 2.53 ERA and a contract that expires in the fall. The Jays are currently battling for a playoff spot in either AL East or via the Wild Card. (Oddsmakers have Toronto as a 25/1 World Series shot.) By the way, it’s been over 20 years since the team’s made the postseason.

UFC 190 is going down this weekend and the marquee tilt is unquestionably Ronda Rousey putting her bantamweight title on the line versus Bethe Correia. The heavily hyped bout features Rousey (-1500) as the overwhelming favourite of the two undefeated figthers, which means oddsmakers consider the war of words between both parties to be a fair more closely contested battle than what’ll go down in the Octagon. Here’s a look at the predictably tense pre-fight staredown courtesy of MMA Fighting.
Did You Know?
- The USA Today Coaches Poll has determined Ohio State to be the best team in college football. The defending national champions are trailed by TCU and Alabama in the rankings. The flattering ranking isn’t the main story attached to the program, though. Ohio State has suspended four players (including All-America defensive end Joey Bosa) for a variety of infractions that range from pot to academics. The Buckeyes officially begin the season with a road game at Virginia Tech on September 7.
- The NL East leading Washington Nationals squeaked by the Marlins on Thursday afternoon. Max Scherzer gave up only three hits in seven innings and Ryan Zimmerman knocked a solo shot over the wall to give the Nats the 1-0 victory. (By the way, new closer Jonathan Papelbon was flawless in the final frame picking up the save.) Washington heads to New York tonight to begin an important three game series versus the rival Mets. Meanwhile, Miami gets ready to start a homestand against the Padres.
