The Viral Roundup – Lou’s Creed Edition
Hello! Welcome to a special TGIF (shout out to Graham Lubbock) go-around of The Viral Roundup. We’re your daily one-stop shop for all the big news, big buzz and big developments headlining a new day in the world of sports. In today’s edition: Lou Lamoriello heads north, Scott Kazmir is sent east and the Yankees continue to sit comfortably at the top of the AL East.
Did You Hear?
Were you expecting to hear that longtime Devils guru Lou Lamoriello was going to be hired as the new Maple Leafs GM. Of course not. Who could see it coming? That said, Toronto has brought in the Garden State fixture to take the reins at general manager. Lamoriello comes in was an excellent resume (21 playoff appearances and 3 Stanley Cups in 28 years in New Jersey) but the Devils have been relatively lackluster over the past few seasons. He’s joining a franchise that’s underwhelmed for decades and the expectation is for he and new coach Mike Babcock to right the ship. Oddsmakers currently have Toronto as a 150/1 shot to win the Stanley Cup next summer.
Did You See?
A young Astros fan snagged a foul ball with confidence and skill. Not only was it a great catch, but the Astros might keep that in mind if they start scouting younger and younger.
Did You Know?
- Speaking of the Astros, they’ve dropped back a bit in the AL West thanks to the Angels picking things up of late. In a bid to improve the pitching staff, the club’s made a deal to acquire veteran southpaw Scott Kazmir from the A’s. (Going the other way: Minor leaguers Daniel Mengden and Jacob Nottingham.) Kazmir comes to his hometown of Houston having gone 5-5 with a 2.38 ERA in 2015. The move signals the start of important trade deadline deals and Houston’s desire to strengthen their rotation. The Astros are considered a 14/1 shot to win the World Series.
- The Yanks continue to look strong in the second half of the season. New York swept Baltimore today to improve to 9-2 in their last 11. Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-4 with 4 RBI for the Pinstripes as they rolled over the Orioles 9-3. Masahiro Tanaka snagged his seventh win of the year going 7+ innings with a strikeout total of seven. Next Up: The Yankees head to Minnesota to take on the Twins, while the Orioles will try to bounce back in the Sunshine State versus the Rays.
- The Arizona Coyotes and the City of Glendale have come to a two-year lease agreeement. Initially, Glendale voted to terminate their lease with the NHL club, but this agreement indicates that there will not be a separation. The Coyotes are listed as a whopping 200/1 shot to win the Stanley Cup.
