Masahiro Tanaka has been mostly fantastic since returning from the DL and that campaign continued yesterday afternoon with an excellent showing on the mound versus Oakland. The Yanks starter only gave up two hits over nearly eight innings in a 6-2 New York victory. Lending some run support were the bats of Jacoby Ellsbury (2 RBI) and Brett Gardner (3-5 with a homer) in this matinee thumping. The AL East leading Yanks start a new set tonight versus division rival Boston, while Oakland heads to Cleveland to face the Indians.

UFC 189 goes down this weekend in Las Vegas with two marquee matchups, although the main event altering injury to Jose Aldo has definitely hurt the star power of this card. Irish featherweight Conor McGregor (a -190 favourite) ranks as the evening’s star attraction as he takes on Chad Mendes for the interim title. Not as hyped, but certainly of interest is Saturday’s other title fight between welterweight foes Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald. Lawler is considered a +145 underdog to retain his title in the octagon. If you’re looking to get psyched up for the fights, check out these two promo videos put out by the UFC.
Did You Know?
- Kansas City ranks among the hottest teams in Major League Baseball with the All-Star Game in the on deck and that status remained intact yesterday with the Royals topping the Rays 8-3. The victory (powered in part by homers from Lorenzo Cain and Salvador Perez) completed KC’s four game sweep of Tampa and brings the winning streak to five straight games. Kansas City will try to keep their winning ways going tonight versus the visiting Blue Jays, while Tampa Bay aims to turn the ship around against the AL West leading Astros.
- Remember how LeBron James opted to be a free agent this year as a precautionary measure with a plan to return to Cleveland after everything fell into place? It looks like that period has passed and LeBron will ink a two-year deal at max salary. The Cavs also have Kevin Love back in the mix and are currently slated as an 11/4 shot to win the NBA Championship in 2016.
- Speaking of title contenders, San Antonio (a team facing 3/1 odds) have gotten the go-ahead from Bruce Bowen to let LaMarcus Aldridge wear #12 for the Spurs.
