The Viral Roundup – Killer Cueto Edition

The Viral Roundup – Killer Cueto Edition

Greetings! Welcome to the humpday go-around of The Viral Roundup.

We’re your daily one-stop for all the big news, big buzz and big developments headlining a new day in the world of sports. In today’s edition: Johnny Beisbol dazzles in D.C., Vladimir Tarasenko gets paid and the Celtics have acquired a newly minted NBA champ.

Did You Hear?

When you go up against Max Scherzer, you better counter with some quality pitching of your own. Cincinnati (a +145 moneyline road underdog) enjoyed an excellent outing from Johnny Cuerto with 11 Ks and only two hits surrendered over nine innings in a 5-0 thumping of the Nationals. Joey Votto smacked Scherzer around on Tuesday night, knocking in runs via RBI single, RBI double and a right field solo tater. Cincy can sweep the series tomorrow night in Washington when they face off against southpaw hurler Gio Gonzalez. The Reds will counter with Michael Lorenzen.

Did You See?

Keith Olbermann obliterated Toronto Sun columnist Steve Simmons during KO’s Worst Person In The Sports World segment and it was glorious. (It’s never good when you’re ranked as worse than Redskins owner Dan Snyder in any countdown.) Simmons’ hit piece on Phil Kessel gets the proper torching it deserves courtesy of Olbermann.

Did You Know?

- The St. Louis Blues have ponied up the dough to keep superstar scorer Vladimir Tarasenko with the franchise well into the next decade. The Blues and the 23-year-old Russian forward have inked an 8-year pact worth $60 million that will (presumably) keep the first-rounder in Missouri through to his 30s. Tarasenko scored 37 goals and 36 assists last season in a year where individual point totals were relatively anemic. Tarasenko also contributed seven points in a one round postseason appearance. St. Louis is currently pegged as a 14/1 Stanley Cup hopeful.

- It was understood going into the offseason that the NBA champion Golden State Warriors would find a new home for David Lee. That change of scenery was locked in today when the Warriors established a deal to send Lee to the Boston Celtics for Gerald Wallace. Lee lost his starter’s role last year when Draymond Green took over the position thanks to a hamstring injury. Green excelled so much that he became the starter.

- Optimistic that Toronto Argonauts running back Andre Durie will return before the season’s through? You might have more faith in his comeback than his coach does. Head coach Scott Milanovich told the press that Durie’s knee injury on Sunday meant there was a good chance he’s done for the season. Speaking of the Argos, they go into Monday’s tilt in Calgary as six point underdogs.
