The Viral Roundup – Blank Space Edition
Happy Monday! Welcome to another sunny go-around of The Viral Roundup. We’re your daily one-stop shop for all the big news, big buzz and big developments headlining a new day in the world of sports. In today’s edition: The Marlins can’t muster a run against Greinke, the Busch brothers dominate at Sonoma Raceway and it’s no longer a lock LeBron’s back in Cleveland this fall.
Did You Hear?
Is Zack Greinke the best pitcher in Major League Baseball? He’s at least up in the upper echelon with Max Scherzer and Madison Bumgarner even if his team hasn’t always been capitalizing on his stellar play. On Sunday, Greinke improved to 6-2 on the season as the Dodgers (a one-and-a-half run road favourite) blanked the Marlins 2-0. The Los Angeles hurler threw 7+ innings of shutout ball that included six strikeouts and only four hits surrendered. Oddly, this was Greinke’s first W since May 5 despite the fact he’s been on a 20+ inning shutout streak. RBI contact from Howie Kendrick and Adrian Gonzalez gave the NL West leading Dodgers the necessary run support.

An absolutely brutal and amazing knockout on Friday’s Bellator 139 card is still provoking bouts of gasping and screaming. Check out Hisaki Kato’s incredible left hand KO of Joe Schilling and be amazed.
Did You Know?
- In news that sounds like it should be absolutely terrifying to the city of Cleveland, but might not be… LeBron James will bypass his player option and become a free agent on July 1. Does this mean King James is done with Ohio for a second time? Possibly not. LeBron’s expected to re-sign provided that the Cavaliers do a competent job of picking up talent this summer. (Say, aren’t LaMarcus Aldridge and Marc Gasol on the market?) By the way, the Cavs were pegged as a 9-to-4 shot to win the 2016 NBA title hours after the end of the 2015 NBA Finals.
- After the orgy of drafting and trades from Friday and Saturday, Sunday’s NHL transactions were a bit more sedate. The main attention-grabbers from yesterday were a pair of players getting placed on waivers. Mike Richards was given the waiver wire treatment by the Los Angeles Kings, same with Montreal and PA Parenteau. Free agency begins on July 1 with a relatively underwhelming slate of players available.
- Kyle Busch scored his first win of 2015 on Sunday by coming in at first place at Sonoma Raceway. Arriving in second place: Kyle’s brother Kurt. Kyle’s 2015 was in need of a positive result like this. The Vegas born NASCAR vet suffered a nasty injury at Daytona International Raceway back in February.
