Coming off a season in which they made it to the AFC Divisional round of the playoffs, the Houston Texans start their pre-season tonight when they travel to the Carolina Panthers at 7 p.m. ET. The Panthers are looking to return to the playoffs for the first time since the 2008 season.
Texans to Use Strong 2011 Campaign to Start Pre-Season Action
Houston saw their 2011 season end in the Divisional round of the AFC playoffs after knocking off the Cincinnati Bengals in the Wild Card round. It was a major step in the right direction for the franchise, which will go for its second straight playoff berth this season. Led by quarterback Matt Schaub and running back Arian Foster, the Texans will surely put up points again in 2012.
Cam Newton Hopes to Avoid Sophomore Slump in 2012
After a record-setting rookie campaign, quarterback Cam Newton will look to avoid a sophomore slump as he leads the Panthers on the field. Newton will be supported by the Panthers’ two-headed attack in the backfield of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart for a second season. The pair combined for 11 rushing touchdowns and almost 1,600 rushing yards in 2011.
As the pre-season begins for these two teams, it will be interesting to see how Cam Newton and Matt Schaub are utilized in the first game. Will they play more than one series? Well, we see the Texans as the favorite to win this game, simply because they have more experience in the trenches. The online betting site Bet365.com has a generous spread of +3.0 for the Texans, which we will gladly take.
