Riding the Surging NHL Wave Rolling out of California
Sticking with the red hot Kings, our focus is on the Los Angeles versus Calgary Flames NHL Western Conference clash tonight. This Pacific Division puck action hits the pond at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, AB, at 9:00 PM ET on March 10, 2014. The Kings are ruling and, somewhat surprisingly, the Flames have burnt some teams recently as well.
LA Kings regaining 2012 Stanley Cup Championship form
Following a recent run, that saw Los Angeles post a 6-13-2 record prior to the Sochi Olympic break, the Kings have been red hot as they have won seven straight contests. Strong on both sides of the puck, Los Angeles has outscored their opponents 22-10 including a 4-2 win in Edmonton last night. Playing on back to back nights and/or visiting Calgary and Edmonton on the same road trip is not new to the Kings. In their last two games in two nights action, LA won 6-4 in Colorado (26/2/14) and then flew into the Stampede City and defeated the Flames 2-0.
Young prospects are helping to ignite the barely flickering Flames
We mentioned in the opening that the Flames have ‘surprisingly’ burnt some teams recently as Calagary has won three of their last five games. It’s surprising because the Flames were relatively quiet at the trade deadline and have called up (and are playing) nine prospects from their AHL affiliate in Abbotstford, BC over the past two months. That includes rookie goaltender Joni Orito who is 2-2 (eight goals against) during his first taste on NHL action and should get his fifth start tonight. Orito’s first appearance was in the 2-0 loss to the Kings ten days ago.

Handicappers who convince themselves - and anyone else who will listen - that the Kentucky Derby is just another race probably haven't cashed too many tickets on the first Saturday in May. The truth is people should bet the Derby differently because of just how unlike any other race it is.
