Pittsburgh Pirates: Still trying to catch the St. Louis Cardinals

Try as they might, Pittsburgh has come empty while chasing St. Louis all season long. Although they posted a sparkling 19-8 record during August, the Pirate were only able to gain a half game on the equally hot Cardinals who they trail by five games in the NL Central. Pittsburgh enjoyed a day off with travel on Monday following a weekend series at home against Colorado. The Pirates are on a 10-3 recent run and they have a pitching edge to open this three-game series in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee Brewers: The Brew Crew have been a thorn in the Pirates side this season

After occupying the MLB cellar for much of the first half, Milwaukee has played some competitive ball since the All-Star break. The Brewers bolted out of the break with a home sweep of the Pirates by an 18-7 combined count. Despite their near mirror opposite records, the Brew Crew have battled hard against the Buccos as their 2015 MLB season series is tied at six games apiece. Possibly feeling the affects of the dog days of summer – Milwaukee has stumbled to a 4-7 recent record.

Brewers vs Pirates MLB Prediction: Pittsburgh RHP Gerrit Cole (15-7 ERA 2.44) faces Milwaukee RHP Jimmy Nelson (10-10 ERA 3.61) in the battle on the bump here. Cole was a little shaky during the first part of August (12 runs in four starts) but he allowed just one earned run over his last two starts. Nelson is a middle of the road pitcher who is stuck on a bad baseball team and he’s given up 13 runs over his last four starts. We are backing the Buccos with a 500 unit wager on the money odds posted on the betting board at the William Hill online sportsbook. Raise the Jolly Roger!
