As we head into the 2012 NHL playoffs, a look at the postseason contenders shows a mix of savvy seasoned veterans, along with some not so playoff familiar teams, as the race for Lord Stanley’s Cup is upon us!
Cup Contenders: NHL Western Conference Standings
For the Detroit Red Wings, 2012 marks their 21st consecutive year with a postseason appearance. That run is the longest current streak of it’s kind amongst the NHL, NFL, MLB, and NBA North American pro leagues. Vancouver is comfortably positioned in the chase for the Cup Championship as the Canucks are back in the postseason for the fourth consecutive season. St. Louis, the biggest “shock and awe” team in the league this season, has stormed back into the playoffs, as the Blues are currently the top overall team in the NHL.
NHL Eastern Conference Playoffs: New York Leads The Pack
After sneaking into the dance last season, in the eight and final playoff spot, the Rangers soared to the top of the East standings back in December this season and have been on cruise control ever since. Do the Blueshirts have enough offense to win it all? We would be cautious when taking a bite out of the Big Apple! Shock value in the East comes from the Ottawa Senators – who many expected would finish dead last during the 2011 NHL season. Now the Sens are looking to knock off the beasts of the USA East and bring the Cup back to Canada. In addition to New York – Boston, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia are standing in the way.
