National Football League Futures Betting 2016 AFC Championship
Old guard still possess AFC Championship top chalk status
Perennial NFL playoff contenders, New England and Denver, are once again the early favorites to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. The roles are reversed this year as the Patriots own top chalk status prior to the start of the 2015 NFL season – a role Denver has owned the past two years. It’s tough to ague against New England as the Super Bowl Champs core players should return largely intact. Denver on the other hand is dealing with a fatigued Peyton Manning while WR Demaryius Thomas and WR Wes Welker, plus TE Julius Thomas, are all unrestricted free agents.
Indianapolis, Baltimore and Pittsburgh round out the top five futures favorites in the AFC
After earning a 2015 NFL playoff berth, the Colts, Ravens and Steelers are all highly placed on the Bet365 AFC Championship futures board. An O-Line upgrade is needed to keep Colts franchise QB Andrew Luck upright while the D-Line could dearly use a run stuffing tackle to anchor the defense in Indianapolis. Pittsburgh needs help across the defense and they are hoping that RB Le’Veon Bell returns healthy – after he serves a pending two-game season opening suspension. Baltimore has a boatload of free-agents including top WR Torrey Smith and Pro Bowl RB Justin Forsett. We see the Ravens resigning Smith but Forsett could be cut loose due to his age and contract demands.
AFC 2016 Champion Futures Wager: We have now gone eleven seasons without a back-to-back AFC Championship winner. New England was the last team to turn the double while winning two straight Super Bowl titles during the 2003 & 2004 NFL seasons. Liking the Colts, and their price that we can work with down the road, we are placing a 300 unit wager on Indianapolis to capture the 2016 AFC Championship.
