Following impressive sweeps of Detroit and Anaheim in their ALDS match-ups, Baltimore and Kansas City are set to clash in the MLB American League Championship Series. The Royals are back in the ALCS for the first time since 1985 while the Orioles last played on the AL Championship stage back in 1997. Game 1 of what should be a closely contended series hits the field on October 10, 2014, at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore.
Don’t underestimate no quit Kansas City Royals in ALCS
Heading out of the All-Star break with four straight loses, Kansas City was eight games behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central and owned a 48-50 record on July 21, 2014. The Royals went 41-23 the rest of the way but fell one game short of the Tigers in the race for the ALC pennant. Being as such it was off the AL Wild Card game for KC as they hosted the Oakland Athletics in a “win or go home” one game showdown. Down 7-3 entering the bottom of the eighth, the Royals scored three runs and then added one more in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. After Oakland scored once in the top of the twelfth, Kansas City came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to earn a 9-8 game and series win and move on to the ALDS.
Royals rule in three game sweep of the Angels in ALDS playoffs
In their sweep of Anaheim, who owned a MLB best 98-64 regular season record, KC outscored the Angels 15-6 to move to within four victories of playing in the World Series for the first time in 29 years. It was also a magical 1985 Fall Classic for Kansas City as they came back from a 3-1 World Series deficit to take out their US State rivals the St. Louis Cardinals in the Show Me Series. Apart from trailing the Angels 1-0 in the top of the first during Game 3, that was quickly erased by three KC runs in the bottom of the inning, the Royals didn’t trail Anaheim over the other 30 innings in their ALDS victory. Establishing themselves as the Kansas City Cardiac Kids the Royals have won three extra inning games, out of the four contests they have played, during the 2014 MLB playoffs.
