Calgary vs San Jose: Flickering Flames Face Surging Sharks in Northern California
San Jose Sharks: Look to get back on track
On November 12, 2015, San Jose was sporting a 7-8-0 record, they had just lost three of four matches at home, and they were embarking on an east coast road trip to play six games over ten days. Certainly not the greatest scenario but the Sharks response was nothing short of amazing as they won all six contests by a 19-11 combined final count. The wheels went wobbly though as the Sharks returned home and got crushed 5-2 by Chicago on Wednesday. Although it’s somewhat inexplicable, due to the fact that Sharks went 91-38-18 at home during the previous four seasons, the Shark Tank hasn’t been a safe haven for San Jose as they are just 3-6-0 at home this season.
Calgary Flames: Stumbling season start continues for the young Stampede City Crew
When Calgary added Dougie Hamilton and Michael Frolik during the offseason – the Flames fan base was buzzing about their Stanley Cup chances. Cup fever has subsided considerably though as Calgary stumbled out of the starting gate with a dismal 8-13-2 record. That leaves Calgary just two points ahead of their provincial rival Edmonton in the “battle” for last place in the Pacific Division and overall in the NHL. The fact that the Flames are a young team that’s having trouble scoring (2.35 GPG) has compounded a huge goaltending problem. Karri Ramo, Jonas Hiller and Joni Ortio make up what has been a three-ring circus in Cowtown. That netminding carousel is sporting a league worst 3.52 goals against average – though they have been “slightly” better recently.
San Jose vs Calgary Call: This is the first of five meetings between these Pacific Division foes this season. Calgary has dominated San Jose recently as the Flames have won six of the last seven meetings by a 21-10 margin – including their last three visits to the Shark Tank. Martin Jones (11-6-0 GAA 2.14) gets the call for San Jose while Calgary counters with Jonas Hiller (2-3-0 GAA 3.67) in the netminding matchup tonight. Martin has decent overall numbers but stopped just 21 of 25 shots in the loss to the Hawks. Hiller has been injured, physically and ego wise, but his gets his first start since October 28 here. Expecting a spirited effort from both sides – we will back the OVER with a 1000 unit wager on the Alternate Goal Total posted on the NHL betting board at Bodog.
