2015 CFL Team Previews: The Blue Bombers Will Be At The Bottom Again

Last year was a tale of two seasons for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers as they started 5-1 but then lost 10 of their final 12 games. For them to change their course in 2015, they’ll have to find a way to score more points than than the 22.1 they scored last season, which was the third-fewest in the CFL.

Most Significant Offseason Changes
Richie Hall was hired to take over as defensive coordinator for a Blue Bombers team that gave up the most points in the CFL last season (481). Winnipeg was busy in the offseason mainly adding to their offensive and defensive line to get stronger at the point of attack. Offensive lineman Sukh Chungh was the first pick of the 2015 CFL Draft and he may help solidify the line right away.
They’ll Be Successful If…
Hall can turn around the defense and quarterback Drew Willy can have another solid season throwing the ball, but limiting his picks. The Blue Bombers were killed last season against the run – especially in the second half of last season. Hall is not a flashy coordinator on the defensive side of the ball but he teaches fundamentally sound football and the players have to buy into his scheme. Willy passed for the third most yards in the league last season but he had two more interceptions than touchdowns. He has a star wide receiver in Clarence Denmark, who ranked second in receiving yards last season, but he has to find him and others in his uniform unlike like last season.
They’ll Be Unsuccessful If…
The defense struggles once again, Willy continues to make mistakes, and the Bombers do not establish home field advantage. If the new guys on the defensive line cannot stop the run and Hall does not implement a strong defensive scheme Winnipeg may be in for another long season. The Blue Bombers found their quarterback in Willy and with a season under his belt he has to learn not to throw the costly turnover.
Last season’s leading rusher in Nic Grigsby is now with Hamilton and while the team signed a couple of backs, second-leading rusher Paris Cotton led the team in rushing yards last season may have to shoulder the load going forward. The backs have to take pressure off Willy and if they do not, the Bombers may have some big issues on offense.
2015 Draft Tracker
1. Chungh, Sukh OL Calgary
2. Richards, Addison WR Regina
2. Morgan, Brendan DB Queen’s
4. Normand, Christophe RB Laval
5. Lattanzio, Ettore DL Ottawa
6. Warden, Justin LB Bishop’s
The Blue Bombers made some solid offseason additions but the one big one is the new guy running the defense in Hall. Winnipeg was shredded last season, giving up way too many big plays – mainly on the ground – and while he will lay a solid groundwork, the Blue Bombers will still struggle on defense. Willy will have another big season in terms of passing yards but he will have to air it out early and often to keep the defense off the field. Winnipeg will – for the second season in a row – finish in the basement of the West and fail to make the playoffs.
Prediction: Fifth in West Division
